Homestar Runner for the Braves

Mark Lemke is a former Major League Baseball player for the Atlanta Braves, The Brothers Chaps' home team. He was indirectly the inspiration for Homestar Runner's name, and as a tribute to this, his last name appears in a number of odd places in the Homestar Runner universe.

Origin

Taken from an interview with The Brothers Chaps

...there was an old local grocery store commercial, and we live in Atlanta, and it advertised the Atlanta Braves. It was like, "the Atlanta Braves hit home runs, and you can hit a home run with savings here!" And so there was this player named Mark Lemke, and they said something like "All star second baseman for the Braves." And our friend knows nothing about sports, and so he would always do his old timey radio impression of this guy, and not knowing any positions in baseball or whatever, he'd just be like, "Homestar Runner for the Braves." And we were just like, "Homestar Runner? That's the best thing we've ever heard!"

Another interview clarified that the friend was Jamey Huggins, who played in the band Of Montreal from 1998 to 2010.

Lemke was the regular second baseman for the Atlanta Braves from 1990 through 1997 and no longer plays in the majors. According to MLB's website, he was never an All-Star. Mark Lemke was known as the Braves' "Mr. October" after stellar post-season performances [1].

  • Just visible in business trip.
  • Jibblies 2, visible only beyond the left margin in the .swf file, in the scene with Strong Sad dealing tarot cards for Pom Pom.
  • At the end of hiding.
• Everybody to the Limit — When the words "come on" flash on the Visor Robot, just before Strong Bad pops out, "come on" changes to "lemke".
• Main Page 14 — When "Store" is rolled over, the shower is fogged up and the word "LEMKE" will appear.
• Email stunt double — The newspaper has a picture of Mark Lemke.
  • This newspaper reappeared in dangeresque 3.
• Email business trip — One of Homestar's passes reads "LEMKE".
• Summer Short Shorts (DVD commentary) — Matt makes reference to The Lemmer, a nickname for Mark Lemke.
• One of the made-up holidays on the 2010 Calendar is "lemke". The holiday is on August 13, which is Mark Lemke's birthday.
• Haunted Photo Booth — Homestar compliments himself for his "Mark Lemke" costume, even suggesting that he's the "Homestar Runner for the Braves".
