A Homestar Runner Cartoon
"The House That Gave Sucky Treats"
Voices by Matt Chapman & Missy Palmer
Written, Directed and Animated by Los Brothers Chaps
{Homestar's head pops up slowly, then lightning flashes and thunder cracks}
HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh, hello. This year, we're going to do things a little differently. {scary voice, eyes slanted menacingly} We're all coming to your house to trick or treeeeat! {normal face and voice} So just answer the door, pick a treat, and drag it on top of us. We'll do the rest. {Pause} Okay, bye!
Coach Z
{Knocks in a rhythm.}
Intro
{rapping} Doot-doo-doot-doo, an' I'll drink up all the Hennessy ya got on your shelf, but first let me introduce myself. My name is Coach Z. Pronounced with an "oach Z."
Jujyfruits
Ooh, Jorjyfruits! Oh, I mean Jerjyfrorts. I mean, {straining} GEORGIE FRORGIE! {pause} George Foreman?
Boston Baked Beans
Ya know, I once knew a fellow in Boston 'could tell ya the time of the day at any time of the day. Ya'd say, "Say there Boston, what's the time of day?" And he'd say, "10:30." And you'd look at him and say, "But Boston, it's half past noon!" And he'd look back at ya and say, "Well, those are the breaks."
Cherry Clan
Da Cherry Clan. Are they related to the Wu-Tang Clan? 'Cause ya know, their first album was the BAERMB! In fact, you don't have a copy of "The 36 Chambers" in there, do ya? 'Cause I'd love to listen to it right now! Ya mind if I come in?
The King Of Town
{Rings the doorbell instead of knocking.}
Intro
Trick or treat, I'm horrible! {Strong Bad pokes his head out from the right of the screen and says, "You got that right." The Hornblower rides by on a stone wheel. The Knight is standing on the lawn.}
Butterscotch
Ooh, butterscotch! Would you mind melting those down and pouring them over a ham? {pulls out a ham}
Fun size Butterfinger
That's it?! Well, if you think that I'll accept this paltry treat just because it has "butter" in the name... well, you'd be right! Give it here!
Stick of Butter
Ooh, a stick of butter! {noisily scarfs the stick of butter} {still with butter in his mouth} Trick or treat... Again? Please?? {swallows}
Strong Mad and The Cheat
{Bangs on door, creating yellow bursts.}
Intro
THE CHEAT: {The Cheat noises} STRONG MAD: IS YOUR REFRIGERATOR PERRY RUNNING?
Rock Candy
STRONG MAD: {staring at it, puzzled.} HALLOWEEN!
Pop Rocks
{The Cheat eats the Pop Rocks} STRONG MAD: NO. NO! NOOO!! {The Cheat takes a drink of cola} THE CHEAT: {squealing The Cheat noises, head explodes}
Rocks
{Strong Mad eats the rocks, then bites off half of a can of cola. The Cheat's head inexplicably explodes.}
Marzipan
{Also rings the doorbell.}
Intro
{singing} Hey, ho! Let's go! Hey, ho! Trick or treat!
Candy Corn
Candy corn?? Do you have any real corn? Or Indian corn?
Rice Cakes
Hey, rice cakes! I like to eat them without water.
Steak
Is this a joke? It's not funny. {Strong Bad, uncostumed, drops three more steaks into her bag with a grin on his face}
The Poopsmith and Pom Pom
{Knocks rapidly and softly.}
{They don't have an intro, as neither can really speak.}
Mary Jane
{They look at each other, then The Poopsmith holds up a sign that says "Give us something good instead". Pom Pom laughs.}
Chick-O-Stick
{The Poopsmith dunks it in a bucket labeled "dippin stuff", which looks suspiciously like whatsit. He offers it to Pom Pom, who shakes his head "no".}
Astropop
{The Poopsmith shoots his gun at Pom Pom so it reflects off Pom Pom's "I ♥ Flint" button and his microphone and hits himself in the chest sensor. He falls off the side of the steps.}
Pumpkin
{The "secret" music from the Zelda video game series plays. The pumpkin is firmly lodged in The Poopsmith's mouth. When the door closes, a pixelated caption reads "YOU UNLOCKED A SECRET CHARACTER!"}
Homsar
{Knocks "Shave and a Haircut".}
{This is an Easter egg, only accessible if you give The Poopsmith or Pom Pom the pumpkin.}
Intro
I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for some candy today!
Shavin' Creem
YaAaAaAh, I'm the original ladies' man!
Black and Orange Taffy
{singing} If you give me a treat, make sure that it's sweet, and I'll eeeat iiiiiit...
Wrench
Oh no, I think this is my favorite!
Strong Bad
{Instead of knocking or ringing, Strong Bad yells, "Open the freakin' door!"}
Intro
Where in the world is my candy?
Fun Size Butterfinger
Oh, a "fun size" candy bar? Tell me this: what's fun about eating less candy? Maybe if you gave me an entire bag of them it would be fun. The only fun I'm going to have with this thing is smearing it all over your door when I leave. {If you choose this, the door is smeared with the Butterfinger when Strong Sad shows up.}
Marshmallow Bunny
Why you lazy crap for crap! All you've got is old freakin' Easter candy? This thing's rock hard, man! Well, you just made it onto my "People I gotta egg today" list. {He shows you the list:}
>People to egg
>(in no particular order)
>
>ronnie pudding
>
>king of town
>
>kewpie dan
>
>homestar
>
>you lazy crap
for crap
Apple
What is this crap?!? What are you, a dentist? Or a hippie? Or some kind of hippie dentist?
Strong Sad
{Knocks softly.}
Intro
Trick or treat, I guess.
Necco candy wafers
Oh, Necco Wafers. These remind me of when I used to eat the colored chalk when I was in school. I was sick for a year and nearly died...
Baking Chocolate
{a bit surprised and bounces slightly} Oh! Baking Chocolate! I used to eat this stuff when there was no chocolate in the house. And now, it's my only friend.
Campbell's Soup
Oh. While I do appreciate the relevance of this, given my costume, I was kind of hoping for something that I wouldn't have to prepare. You know, like Necco Wafers or baking chocolate...
Bubs
{Knocks in a funky rhythm, similar, but not identical, to Coach Z's.}
Intro
{singing} Please, baby please, baby baby baby please! Gimme some candy!
Mallo Cup
{singing} I got a shallow gup and a crallow nup, somebody give me dat Mallow Cup.
Dum-Dums
Oh! {singing} I'm such a big dum-diddy-dum-diddy-diddy-dum-dum...my.
Bazooka Gum
I never understand the comics that come in this bubble gum. I mean, the first frame is some guy saying, {he unfolds the comic and shows it to you} "Look out, the sky is falling!" And the second frame is some guy getting hit on the head with a rock {he unfolds the comic and shows it to you again. The second frame is captioned "Fortune: The rock hit the guy in the sweater"}. And I'm sitting there going, "What the heck just happened?", and before I know it, I swallowed my bubble gum!
Homestar Runner
{Homestar continually knocks until you answer.}
Intro
{singing} Believe it or not, I'm walkin' around, I never thought I could trick or tre-e-eat...
Smarties
All right, Smarties! Marzipan said to eat lots of these this year. I'm not really sure why she said that though. {Crickets chirp, record scratches when Homestar breaks the silence.} Umm... trick or treat!
Circus Peanuts
{Dances and "doots"Entrance of the Gladiators(known to most as a circus theme). You close the door, but Homestar rings the doorbell, and when you answer, he is still dancing and singing.}
Handful of Change
{sounding slightly disappointed and frequently pauses} Oh... a handful of change. I guess I can use this to go, um, buy some candy. So... thank you for adding a step to my Halloween process.
Later that Night...

The Discussion
HOMESTAR RUNNER: Hey Strong Bad, I really like your costume. The Spanish Inquisition? That's great.
STRONG BAD: Look, for the last time, I'm not The Spanish Inquisition, I'm not Cab Calloway, and I'm not Strong Bad wearing a yellow turtleneck! I'M CARMEN FREAKIN' SANDIEGO!!
MARZIPAN: I like Cab Calloway.
STRONG BAD: Okay, Poopsmith, that's the worst costume I ever saw. {laughing} I mean, you're Lazer Tag? What, are you supposed to be dressed up as the product or is it more abstract than that, like you're supposed to be the concept of Lazer Tag? Come on man, you know you just found that old crap in a trunk in your basement.
THE KING OF TOWN: Ease off, Strong Bad! He's not the one that dressed up as a girl two years in a row.
STRONG BAD: Oh ho ho ho, you asked for it, King.
{Strong Mad punches The King of Town}
BUBS: Did any of you guys go to that house that was givin' out change? I changed my costume and went back ten times. I made 35 dollars!
STRONG SAD: Did you guys go to that house where they let you into this big room and there's all these people wearing black hoods and they ask you these questions about life and existence and if you answer them wrong you get eternal damnation, but if you answer them right you get a Twizzler?
STRONG BAD: Um... no.
HOMESTAR RUNNER: No.
COACH Z: Nope.
THE KING OF TOWN: No.
BUBS: Nope.
THE CHEAT: Meh.
STRONG MAD: NO.
STRONG SAD: Oh. Never mind.
MARZIPAN: I like your costume, Strong Sad, but you weren't invited this year.
COACH Z: Say, Pom Pom, check out this funky bass groove! A doo'rear, a doo'ri, a doo'rear, a doo'ri! {Grooves around a little}
{Pause}
HOMESTAR RUNNER: Have they voted yet? I really have to pee.
STRONG BAD: Yeah, and the Poopsmith's not smelling any rosier, either.
HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh, oh! I've got an idea! Let's totally freak 'em out. Let's repeat the stuff we just saaaaid!
{loops back to the start of the discussion}
Easter Eggs
- Clicking on the lightswitch (on the left side) will flick the switch on and off.
- When Pom Pom and the Poopsmith knock at your door, move the pumpkin that's sitting on your porch onto them to unlock Homsar (transcription [#Homsar above]). Homsar will only appear in the final scene if you unlock him, though he doesn't say anything.
- When Strong Bad's egging list is up, click on "kewpie dan" to see a sketch of him. (Note: although this egg appears to be glitched, it was intended to open this page in a new window.)
- In the final scene when all of the characters are talking, you can roll over the skull, pumpkin and moon to see funny captions.
- Skull: Get offa me!
- Pumpkin: No costume. Just a pumpkin.
- Moon: Just pick a freakin' character already!
Fun Facts
Trivia
- The length of this toon was originally listed as "?:??" on the Toons page, and now as 4 minutes.
- This is because one could sit there for hours on end doing no commands, and the length would be longer than 240 seconds.
- Marzipan's costume has a small hole in it and her pink flesh is visible beneath, giving further credence to the theory that her body is actually skirt-shaped.
- This is the first instance of The Cheat's head exploding.
- The Bazooka Joe comic that is visible when giving Bubs Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum originally came from an idea The Brothers Chaps thought up for a possible weekly feature. It was never released until they showed it at the March 1, 2005 NYU Talk.
- This is the first toon to feature all the main characters.
Remarks
"NO! NOO! NOOO!"
- Giving The Cheat and Strong Mad pop rocks shows a rare glimpse of The Cheat's mouth open without his teeth being visible.
- Bubs's comment about the house that was giving out change suggests that he went back ten times (making a total of 11 trips) and made $35, implying that the inhabitant was giving out $3.18 per trick-or-treater, on average.
- By comparison, Homestar only receives about 32 cents in his handful of change.
- The only candy that shows up twice is the Fun Size Butterfinger.
- Clicking "Back" leads to Main Page 7, the Halloween Main Page.
- Strong Bad is seen during the King of Town's segment as well as in Marzipan's reaction to steak, but he is not in costume in either one.
- The Brothers Chaps didn't use the current style of animation on Strong Bad (his shadowed eyes), even though they used it in an earlier toon, A Mother's Day Message.
- When The King of Town appears, Strong Bad has the new diamond but older eyes (he also has this design if you give the steak to Marzipan as her treat; he has it when he sneaks more steaks into her bag), and when he comes to the door, he is in his older style.
- All of the King of Town's treat options involve butter, and all of Strong Mad and The Cheat's options involve rocks.
- In the beginning, when the shadows of the things are being thrown at the shadow of the tree, the two shadows overlap and make a darker shadow.
- The candy corn that is an option for Marzipan is not colored properly: Normal candy corn is orange in the middle and yellow on the bottom.
Goofs
- In the final scene where all of the characters are talking, Strong Bad's caption is misspelled: it should read "Carmen Sandiego", not "Carmen San Diego".
- Bubs's caption is also misspelled as "Mars Blackman" instead of "Mars Blackmon".
- As Homestar talks in the first scene, the bottom outline on his cap moves. This is most visible when his face moves close to the viewer.
- When Strong Bad smears the Butterfinger bar on the door and Strong Sad shows up, the melted chocolate on the door disappears when the choices of candy show up.
- After Marzipan tells Strong Sad that he wasn't invited this year, her mouth stays slightly open until the loop starts over.
- After Strong Bad says that the Poopsmith isn't smelling any rosier, his mouth is more open than it is in the middle of the final scene, but it still opens a little wider when the loop starts over.
Glitches
- The light switch can be moved up and down, but it doesn't do anything. You can flip the switch even while the door is opened, and if you leave the light switch down, it will automatically go back up when the next person knocks.
- After Bubs says, "Gimme some candy!", the outline under his mouth nearly vanishes, and the shading of his 'MARS' chain also changes.
- When Homestar is introducing the toon, the line between his head and hat and his eyes seem to move very slightly up and down.
- In the Ruffle version, the pumpkin during the Poopsmith and Pom Pom's scene disappears, so the Homsar Easter egg cannot be activated.
Inside References
- The following are all references from the previous year's Halloween toon, Homestarloween Party:
- The music that plays when Homestar rises up at the start is the same one used when it was time for "Scary Flashlight Ghost Storytelling With a Flashlight".
- Stuffing the pumpkin into the Poopsmith's mouth is a reference to when he was seen bobbing for pumpkins and holding them in his mouth.
- Marzipan noting at the end that "I like your costume, Strong Sad, but you weren't invited this year" refers to the fact that he had been uninvited by Marzipan the previous year.
- The King of Town's comment on Strong Bad dressing up as a girl for two years in a row refers to the previous Halloween toon where Strong Bad dressed up as Carmen Miranda.
- For two years in a row, Strong Bad also dressed up as females named Carmen.
- Homestar once again misidentifies Strong Bad's costume.
- Bubs's line when you give him the Dum-Dum Pop is a reference to A Jumping Jack Contest. (See also Real-World References.)
- Strong Mad attempted almost the same prank greeting as in this toon on Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 4.0.
- Coach Z's rap is a reference to alcohol.
- Loose coins show up twice in this cartoon: you can give Homestar a handful of change, and Bubs talks about going back to the house that was giving out change.
- Cricket noises can be heard when Homestar says he doesn't know why Marzipan said to eat lots of Smarties.
Real-World References
- Coach Z raps a couple lines from Digital Underground's biggest hit song, "The Humpty Dance", substituting his own name for Humpty Hump's. The rhythm he knocks on the door is the Amen Break. The drink he mentions, Hennessy, is a brand of cognac, or brandy. Another line is used at the voting screen when Coach Z tells Pom Pom to "check out this bass groove right here." Coach Z's line "those are the breaks" is also most likely a reference to rapper Kurtis Blow's biggest hit song "The Breaks".
- The joke involving The Cheat consuming Pop Rocks and soda is a reference to an urban legend that states that Mikey, the Life cereal mascot, died when consuming Pop Rocks and soda caused his stomach to explode.
- When you drag the pumpkin onto Pom Pom and the Poopsmith, the music that is played is from the Legend of Zelda games, usually when you unlock something (like blowing up a wall with a bomb, thus creating a door). The particular sound music they use in the toon is from "A Link to the Past", as the dungeon music can be heard after the sound plays.
- Ronnie Pudding, the first name on Strong Bad's list of houses to egg, is the name of Spinal Tap's first bassist.
- Strong Bad greets you with "Where in the world is my candy?", a reference to the computer game and TV show "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" from which his costume comes.
- Strong Sad's comment on receiving the Campbell's soup is a reference to Andy Warhol's (whom Strong Sad is dressed as) series of paintings Campbell's Soup.
- "Please baby, please baby, baby baby please" is a reference to Mars Blackmon's (whom Bubs is dressed up as) exact same line in She's Gotta Have It.
- The skull's line at the end when you hold the mouse pointer over it ("Get offa me") is a quote from Murray, the Demonic Talking Skull from LucasArts' Monkey Island games.
- Homsar's greeting is a play on Wimpy's famous line, "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."
- Marzipan's intro is "Hey, ho! Let's go!" from the Ramones' 1976 hit, "Blitzkrieg Bop". This was also a reference/tribute to Joey's death earlier in 2001.
- Homestar's greeting is sung to the tune of (and is a play on) Believe It or Not, which is the theme song to the TV show The Greatest American Hero.
- Cab Calloway was a famous jazz bandleader and singer whose career spanned many years. Calloway was known for wearing large zoot suits for which Homestar likely mistook Carmen Sandiego's trenchcoat.
- Homestar saying Strong Bad's costume is the "Spanish Inquisition" is a reference to a Monty Python sketch of the same name in which Michael Palin, Terry Jones, and Terry Gilliam were dressed in similar costumes.
- The Poopsmith holding up a sign due to his vow of silence is reminiscent of Wile E. Coyote of Looney Tunes fame.
- The "I choose YOU, <insert character name here>chu" is a reference to the Pokémon anime, where the main character, Ash, has a similar famous line, "I choose YOU, Pikachu!"
- The subject line of the email when the Poopsmith is chosen for best costume, Teddy Poopspin, references Teddy Ruxpin, a popular toy from the '80s made by Worlds of Wonder, the same company that made Lazer Tag.
- If you choose the King of Town for best costume, the subject line of the email is "King of Town, Now Sit Down." This is a reference to Sierra Online's Quest for Glory (aka Hero's Quest), where the phrase "Hut of brown, now sit down" was used to gain access to Baba Yaga's magic hut.
- If you choose Strong Sad for best costume, the subject line of the email is "A vote for Strong Sad is a vote for America." This is a reference to 1984 Presidential Candidate Walter Mondale's Campaign slogan, which was "A vote for Walter Mondale is a vote for America." Mondale lost the election to Ronald Reagan in a landslide, winning only his home state (Minnesota) and the District of Columbia.
- If you choose Marzipan for best costume, the subject is a play on the Riot Grrrl music scene.
- Giving Strong Mad and The Cheat the rocks may be a reference to the only Halloween treat Charlie Brown receives in It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
- When Coach Z mentions "36 Chambers", it is a reference to the Wu-Tang Clan album "Enter The Wu-Tang", also known as the 36 Chambers.
- The "D" on the baseball cap worn by Pom Pom as part of his Michael Moore costume is the insignia for the Detroit Tigers.
- Bubs's line when you give him the Dum-Dum Pop is a play on the line "dum ditty dum ditty dum dum dum" from the children's book [/wiki/Special:BookSources/0679890483 Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb] by Al Perkins. (See also Inside References.)
Fast Forward
- "Cheatachu72" later became The Cheat's screen name in i she be and marzipan.
- The music that was used as Homestar was rising would later be used in the Strong Bad Email theme park as background music for "The Strong Sad Gets Decked Repeatedly Stunt Spooktacular".
- "Your house" was later reused in 3 Times Halloween Funjob where you could, once again, choose Coach Z's and Bubs's treats (and Stinkoman's, too).
- Also, Strong Mad would wear Pom Pom's Detroit Tigers baseball cap as part of his Magnum, P.I. costume.
- The phrase "Get offa me!" would later be said by a sticky note in the email vacation.
- This toon started the Bubslegum Comics.
- The jingle that Homsar sings when given candy sounds strangely like the jingle for the SBLOUNSKCHED! Bar, in candy product.
- The 2005 Halloween toon, Halloween Potion-ma-jig, is also done in the style of a decision-making game, just like this Halloween toon.
- The result of the voting contest was finally revealed, 5 years after the toon's release, in Halloween Awards Show.
- Bubs's door-knocking rhythm would become the same rhythm as used in Hip Hop Dance from New Boots.
- The Cheat again fully opens his mouth in rough copy.
- The "Why you lazy crap for crap!" quote that Strong Bad says later became a System Sound for an error.
- Homestar would later revisit his costume in Greatest American Homestar, singing both a longer cut of his version of Believe It or Not and an excerpt of Entrance of the Gladiators. He is also juggling circus peanuts at the stinger, one of the treats you can give to him.
DVD Version
- The title and opening credits scene has been moved to after the first scene.
- Homestar does not ask the viewer to drag the treats on top of them.
- The doors open on their own.
- Coach Z no longer says "George Foreman?" when given the Jujyfruits.
- The "unlocking" sound for Homsar is higher-pitched and cleaner. It is also much different than on the website.
- Homsar's lines for the shaving cream and wrench are inexplicably switched.
- Homsar's song about the black and orange taffy is more complete, rather than being cut off at the very start, as is the case on the website.
- Homsar appears in the ending whether he was unlocked or not.
- Marzipan adds "What's wrong with girls?" after Strong Mad punches The King of Town.
- Marzipan says "No" to Strong Sad's question just before Strong Sad replies.
- The sentence "Vote for your favorite costume!!" at the end is missing and Homestar does not ask if the viewer has voted yet.
- As Homestar starts the repetition of the end scene, the scene fades out and the toon ends. Specifically, it completely fades out as Homestar says, "The Spanish Inquisition?"
- If you wait too long without making a choice when Pom Pom and The Poopsmith are at the door, the Homsar scene is automatically unlocked.
- However, as a result, just like on the website, the pumpkin goes into the Poopsmith's mouth and you forgo the opportunity to give them a real treat.
- You no longer have the opportunity to see who is dressed up as who at the end, like you can on the website.
- When the toon is played in "Play All", the treats are automatically picked for you. Also, Homsar is automatically unlocked. The treats automatically picked are:
- Coach Z: Boston Baked Beans
- The King of Town: Stick of Butter
- The Cheat and Strong Mad: Pop Rocks
- Marzipan: Rice Cakes
- The Poopsmith and Pom Pom: Chick-O-Stick
- Homsar: Black and Orange Taffy
- Strong Bad: Fun Size Butterfinger
- Strong Sad: Baking Chocolate
- Bubs: Mallo Cup
- Homestar Runner: Circus Peanuts
