About a week after Halloween, Strong Bad frequently hosts a slideshow of photos of Homestar Runner–themed costumes sent in by fans.

Fan Costumes have changed over time. Originally, the pictures had a simple white border, and were shown against a blue night-sky background, with a title at the top. The first Fan Costumes toon was called Fan Costume Commentary, suggesting it wasn't yet intended to become a yearly feature, supported by the fact that the next Fan Costumes toon was released two years later. In that toon, "next" and "previous" buttons were added at the bottom, to skip ahead or look back at previous costumes. Starting the next year with Fan Costumes '06, all Fan Costumes have included the year in the title, suggesting that 2006 was the year they decided to make Fan Costumes a yearly feature. Starting with the same toon, the style was changed as well; all costumes were shown on a projector screen in the basement of the Brothers Strong, with a slide transition between each costume.

Originally, costumes were sent in by email, but starting with Fan Costumes 2015, they were sent to the @StrongBadActual Twitter account, similarly to how Strong Bad Emails were originally sent in by email, and now via Twitter. Earlier Fan Costumes were simpler, with pictures and Strong Bad talking, but over time, they became more complex. Occasionally, something related to Strong Bad's narration will pop up, or another character will start speaking. Starting with Fan Costumes 2015, there are sometimes cuts to other scenes. 2015 was also the first year to include the entire year in the title (2015 as opposed to '15), most likely because it was the first Fan Costumes to be released the 2010s decade. This was continued with all future Fan Costumes. The same year, and all years following, the "next" and "previous" buttons were removed, likely due to the fact that the toons were becoming more complex. Sometimes, pumpkins and other non-costumes will be shown.
