This article is about the Strong Bad Email. For the character, see Marzipan.
Marzipan is the only girl in Free Country, USA, holding an on-again, off-again romantic relationship with Homestar Runner. A kind yet opinionated woman, Marzipan has a fondness for animals and making music and is passionately vegan and environmentally-conscious.

Strong Bad tries to prove that Marzipan loves him.
Characterization
Cast (in order of appearance): Strong Bad, Marzipan
Marzipan is typically Homestar's girlfriend, with this relationship defining her character in early toons. Marzipan frequently breaks up with Homestar, demonstrating her independence, and has even dated other characters including The Cheat and Bubs. Other breakups are inspired by Homestar's unintentional mean streak; he has even been known to show feelings of contempt and resentment toward his girlfriend, as seen in the email narrator (where he calls her "some type of enormous alien cow") and Happy Fireworks (where he uses a cardboard cutout to imitate her and then tells "her" to shut up). Luckily for Homestar, she continues to love him dearly, and the two always seem to end up together again.

Date: Monday, January 20, 2003
Marzipan is a stereotypical environmentalist/vegan/nature-lover — as described by Strong Bad: a "dirty hippie without the dirt."[#endnote_2 [2]] She is vegan, particularly enjoying tofu and other soy products (though in the email coloring she teaches that "soy is also murder"). She spends much of her time singing and playing her guitar, either solo or as a part of the band Cool Tapes (performing alongside The Cheat and Strong Mad). Many of her songs are about happiness and nature. She often makes protest signs to express her views on issues of varying and personal interest.

Running Time: 2:15
Marzipan has a tendency to anthropomorphize inanimate objects — for example, she talks to her guitar, Carol, asks Strong Sad to help resurrect her ficus plant, Credenza, from the dead in 3 Times Halloween Funjob, and once names an ordinary sandwich "Homestar Jr.", proceeding to treat it as though it were a small child. In addition, she has occasionally been fooled by poor imitations of Homestar, such as Tofu Homestar from The Luau and The Cheat's costume from the email do over. Also, in Halloween Potion-ma-jig, she created a potion that could transform Homestar into several different entities, including a strange clone of herself. Upon such instances, Marzipan tends to show more affection to (and quite possibly receives more positive attention from) these pseudo-Homestars than she does her real boyfriend. It is unclear if this reflects a desire to change or replace her current beloved, although she believes her relationship with Homestar has always been open.[#endnote_3 [3]]

Page Title: Compy 386!
Marzipan's status as the only girl in Free Country, USA has made her the target of quite a few prank messages on her answering machine (most of them left by Strong Bad), as well as the unsolicited romantic attentions of several other characters (most notably Coach Z and Bubs). Despite all this, she is very kind and is friends with almost everyone (excepting The King of Town and Strong Bad[#endnote_1 [1]]), such as when she helped Strong Sad make baklava while Strong Bad was in jail; however, she does sometimes think only of herself, most notably when she ignored seven years' worth of calls just to play a prank on Strong Bad. Marzipan often cooperates with other characters on various projects.  For example, The Cheat made a music video for her song "Oh Yeah Yeah". She has appeared in the Dangeresque series of short films as Cutesy Buttons and Sultry Buttons, and once attempted to teach Strong Bad how to make an attractive centerpiece out of junk mail and kitty litter.  She has also hosted a Fall Float Parade with Coach Z and taught a cult-like "kindergarten" class with Homestar, Strong Mad, and Homsar. In DNA Evidence, it is said that she is allergic to pecans.  She also takes a Toga-Yoga class, which is led by Bubs.

DVD:strongbad email.exe Disc Two
Marzipan has been mistaken for a baseball bat, a bell, and especially a broom; in the email long pants, she claims that she is not a broom, much to Homestar's surprise. Though she is often mistaken for such distinctly shaped objects, Strong Bad refers to Marzipan as "human" in retirement.

{Strong Bad stumbles with the second sentence, saying "The only female I've eev see sageento—". He starts the sentence over, this time without stumbling. Also, he pronounces "Ohio" as "Owa-hoh"}
Marzipan is the only female character among the main cast of Homestar Runner (much of the supporting cast is male as well). She is voiced by Missy Palmer, who also writes the lyrics for Marzipan's songs;[#endnote_4 [4]] Marzipan is one of the few characters not voiced by Matt Chapman.

STRONG BAD: {typing} What are you talkin about, Emily? Marzipan can't keep her hands offa me! In fact, I had to change my screen name cause she was buggin me so much. {clears screen} I'd be like, tryin' to write an email like... {typing} "Dear The Cheat" {stops typing} And then—
Marzipan was first drawn by Mike Chapman and named by Craig Zobel.[#endnote_5 [5]] She first appeared in the interactive game She Loves Me!, which established her romantic relationship with Homestar Runner. Marzipan did not speak in She Loves Me! or Marshmallow's Last Stand, and in In Search of the Yello Dello her only vocalization is provided by a stock sound effect; Missy Palmer first voiced Marzipan in The Reddest Radish. Initially conceived solely as Homestar's girlfriend, Marzipan has since developed as a more independent character. Much of her later characterization was drawn from Missy, with occasional interviews remarking how the character had come to act like her voice actress.

{message comes up: "hooray4dolphins: 'sup strong bad? i heart you so much."}
An old Characters page, now in the museum, said the King of Town was Marzipan's father. This concept was quickly abandoned, with The Brothers Chaps later clarifying that it was an idea they had "toyed around with briefly" early in the site's development before rejecting it. The disused idea has occasionally been alluded to in-character, with Marzipan referring to it as a "false allegation" and the King of Town expressing confusion after reading about it online.

STRONG BAD: — it'd come up, and I'd be like close the window. {closes message, continues typing} "Anyways, The Cheat, I was going"—
Missy appears in-character as Marzipan on multiple strongbad email.exe DVD commentaries. In several commentaries, such as marzipan and date, she indicates that the Toons are simply a show that the characters are acting out rather than their real lives; later commentaries like montage no longer include this conceit.

{message comes up: "hooray4dolphins: i like all your muscles," Strong Bad closes it}
Appearance
STRONG BAD: — "to ask you"—
https://web.archive.org/web/20211001000000im_/http://www.hrwiki.org/w/images/thumb/3/3d/Marzycouchslouch.png/180px-Marzycouchslouch.png

{message comes up: "hooray4dolphins: do you go hooray 4 dolphins? i do," Strong Bad closes it}
Marzipan relaxes

STRONG BAD: — "if I could borrow"—
Marzipan has a tall, oblong head that extends to a body covered in a purple dress embellished with white trim and gold buttons. Her skin is a shiny, pinkish tone, and her eyes consist of two black circles of differing sizes. Her mouth typically is held in a slight smile, occasionally appearing as a larger 'U' shape more frequently in older toons. She wears her bright blonde hair in a ponytail, tied with a purple hair band matching her dress. Like several other characters, she does not have arms; she is still able to pick up and manipulate objects, such as playing the guitar. Marzipan is of average height, standing somewhat shorter than Homestar.

{message comes up: "hooray4dolphins: (a long string of characters typed in Webdings font)," Strong Bad closes it}

STRONG BAD: And if that's not enough proof {types "enüff prüf"}, just watch this...
A bell[e]

{Scene cuts to Marzipan out in the field next to a sign laying against a cinder block saying Free Concert For Birds}
Marzipan's lower body is almost always covered by a dress or similar garment, leaving little indication of the shape of her body. Her wide dress combined with narrow head/neck often lead to Marzipan being humorously compared to a broom.

MARZIPAN: {singing} Oh yeah, oh yeah, and I really don't like him at all.
Halloween costumes worn in The House That Gave Sucky Treats and Doomy Tales of the Macabre indicate that her body is shaped like a bell, essentially the same shape as her dress. In A Decemberween Mackerel, Marzipan leaves a single, wide trail through the snow rather than visible footsteps. By contrast, Marzipan is often seen sitting[#endnote_6 [6]] in a pose that suggests a minimal lower-body shape, again reminiscent of a broom or mop. In Kick-A-Ball, she reveals a large combat boot from under her dress — not revealing any limbs or lower body when doing so.

STRONG BAD: So, uh... {Combs back nonexistent "hair" and puts his comb into the back of his pants} Is that another song about Homestar?
Alternate versions of Marzipan have varying depictions of limbs. Old-Timey Marzipan has a skeleton with five "leg" bones, Marzi-Mei has human-like arms and legs (with the later Stinkoman 20X6 redesign covering all limbs in a baggy jumpsuit), and the Mysfit-steries variation of Marzipan has legs and feet but no arms.

MARZIPAN: No, it's about you.

STRONG BAD: About being in love with me?
See main article: Marzipan's Character Video

MARZIPAN: That's disgusting. And I don't like your outfit.
MARZIPAN: Hi, I'm Marzipan, and this is my guitar Carol. Say hi, Carol. {performs an E major scale, ascending and descending} Ooh, E scale. Nice choice. When I'm not rockin' out, I like to dig in my garden and eat. I'm a fiercely independent woman, and I'm fiercely independent about the soy products that I choose. Homestar Runner and I {Homestar leans in frame} are one hot item when I say we are. {says one of the two at random}

STRONG BAD: Well, I'm not telling you my new screen name.
* MARZIPAN: And today we are.<br />HOMESTAR RUNNER: Yay!
* MARZIPAN: And today we are not.<br />HOMESTAR RUNNER: Boo!

MARZIPAN: Well... I don't even know what a scream name is, so there you go. And if you'd please leave now, because I'm tinkering with my guitar.
MARZIPAN: I like baby animals, and cats and dogs. But it makes me sad to see cats and dogs in the same room together. Okay, bye. I'm off to the Chinchilla protest.
{She pulls out a protest sign that reads "Chinchillas OUT!! (of my basement)" and walks away}

STRONG BAD: Oh yeah, well? Say you like me.
HOMESTAR RUNNER: {leaning in frame} {says one of the following at random, depending on which one was said before}

MARZIPAN: No, leave me alone.

* Yay! {if he says "boo" above} {leans out of frame}
STRONG BAD: Say you like me?

MARZIPAN: No.

STRONG BAD: Then do you like {quickly and quietly} Strong Bad?

MARZIPAN: No! You're just saying your name fast. Go away.

STRONG BAD: What about that guy who's brothers with Strong Mad and {quickly and quietly} Strong Sad?

MARZIPAN: That's still you! No!

STRONG BAD: Then how about this one? Do you don't not dislike not Strong Bad?

MARZIPAN: Uh... I guess...

STRONG BAD: See! I told you you loved me! Ooh! I knew it all along! Wait until my friend Emily from Ohio {pronounces it "O-hee-oh"} hears this!!! Oooh, I knew she loves me! {gibberish}

MARZIPAN: Whatever... Come on Carol, let's rock.

{Scene cuts back to Strong Bad's computer room. Three messages pop up from The Cheat:}

Trivia
https://web.archive.org/web/20211001000000im_/http://www.hrwiki.org/w/images/thumb/3/37/grinning_marzipan.png/180px-grinning_marzipan.png

https://web.archive.org/web/20211001000000im_/http://www.hrwiki.org/w/images/thumb/f/ff/don%27t_decode_this.png/180px-don%27t_decode_this.png
Yes, she does have teeth .

Don't decode this
* The term marzipan describes a confectionery consisting primarily of ground almonds and sugar that derives its characteristic flavor from bitter almonds.
* The character page title is a reference to Marzipan's song "Oh yeah yeah" from the email marzipan.
* According to Strong Bad, Marzipan is allergic to pecans.
* Marzipan has a cousin named Debra whom Strong Bad considers "hot".
** Marzipan also has a sister, according to Homestar in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 17.2.
* As revealed in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 15.2, she has apparently had questionable surgery to have her nose removed.
* In A Death Defying Decemberween, Homestar refers to Marzipan's mother as "Mrs. Marzipan", and implies that she is frequently divorced. Marzipan says her latest stepfather is named Seth and works in a "philosophy department", presumably at a university.
* Strong Bad says that Marzipan has a "considerable resistance to death" in origins after being super-glued to Homsar and left for dead.

* The Webdings message transliterates to:hooray4dolphins: i seriou<br />sly hope you<br />didn't somehow<br />decode this. it<br />would make me real<br />sad.
Relationships
* According to the July 21, 2003 Atlanta Journal Constitution interview, Strong Sad's message is a reference to how Mike Chapman once tried to feed his brother Matt cupcakes with toothpaste in them, only to have the younger brother retaliate with vinegar toast.
* When this email first came out, The Brothers Chaps registered the AIM screen name hooray4dolphins. It was always online with an away message, saying that Marzipan wasn't really using that screen name, since she doesn't use computers.
* This email marks the first appearance of Marzipan's guitar Carol. She had previously been seen in The Luau playing a ukulele with an M on it.
* This is another reference to Marzipan being the only girl.
* The YouTube description for this email is "Quadruple negatives abound as Strong Bad tries to get Marzipan to admit she likes him."

Remarks
Main article: Character Relationships

* Strong Bad says that "Marzipan can't keep her hands offa" him, but Marzipan doesn't have any visible hands.
* Homestar Runner and Marzipan's Relationship
* Besides "Do you like Strong Bad", the quadruple negative "Don't not dislike not Strong Bad" could be interpreted to mean that Marzipan dislikes everyone except Strong Bad, rather than specifically liking him.
* Strong Bad and Marzipan's Relationship
* In The Cheat's video, Marzipan's guitar reads "Carl" instead of "Carol".
* Marzipan and The Cheat's Relationship
* In the close-up shots of Marzipan and Strong Bad, the field behind them is a much older version of the current field.
* Marzipan and Strong Sad's Relationship
* Strong Mad and Marzipan's Relationship
* Marzipan and Coach Z's Relationship
* Marzipan and Bubs's Relationship
* Marzipan and The King of Town's Relationship
* Marzipan and Homsar's Relationship

Glitches
Variations
* If you turn up the contrast at the very end of the email when the IMs are on the screen, the IM boxes don't change with the rest of the screen. They just stay black.
https://web.archive.org/web/20211001000000im_/http://www.hrwiki.org/w/images/thumb/1/19/Marzipan_in_highschool.png/96px-Marzipan_in_highschool.png
** Strong Bad's reflection is also not visible in the IMs, even though they are the same color as the screen.
* Also, after Strong Sad's message pops up, if Marzipan's video is viewed, Strong Sad's message reappears afterwards.
* Marzipan blinks over her closed eyes twice; when this happens, a dot appears next to her closed eyes.

Inside References
Stampers!

* When hooray4dolphins Instant Messages Strong Bad, she says "Are you trying to fade me?", which is a reference to the name of Coach Z's new hit single, "These Peoples Try to Fade Me", included on the Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits CD.
* Old-Timey Marzipan (Old-Timey)

MIKE: Marzipan.

MATT: Speaking of Marzipan, look who's here.

MARZIPAN: Hi, guys.

MIKE: Hi—

MATT: {simultaneously} Hi, Marzipan.

MIKE: How does it feel to be featured in your very own Strong Bad Email?

MARZIPAN: It feels about normal.

MATT AND MIKE: {simultaneously} Yeah.

MARZIPAN: Yeah.

MATT: It's got your name. It's got your name all over it.

MARZIPAN: Yeah.

MIKE: {simultaneously} Look, there it is, I'm pointing to it right now.

MARZIPAN: I see. I, uh—I thought this was a particularly thoughtful email.

MIKE: Yeah?

MARZIPAN: And, um, I thought the costume design was very good.

MIKE: There's... Yeah?

MARZIPAN: My—my outfit.

MIKE: It's the same one you're always wearing.

MATT: Well... It's a good outfit, right?

MARZIPAN: Well... Sometimes I change.

MIKE: Oh, okay.

MATT: Oh, an interesting note about that last one that popped up was, uh, it spelled out something, and, what was it—

MIKE: It was in, like—

MATT: —it spelled out "I really hope you didn't translate this. That would make me sad." And of course—

MIKE: And it was in, like, Webdings—

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: Or some Dingbats or something and people translated it.

MATT: It made me really sad.

MIKE: Yeah.

MARZIPAN: Did you notice you reversed my eyes on this one?

MATT: I don't know...

MIKE: I think we did something wrong.

MATT: But they'd be—make sense in perspective, right? The smaller eyes...

MIKE: {simultaneously} But that wasn't why—that's not why...

MATT: She just has one—one eye smaller than the other?

MIKE: {simultaneously} Yeah, just like Strong... Just like Strong Ma—er, uh...

MARZIPAN: That's why I get confused later, because I can barely see Strong Bad while I'm talking to him.

MATT: Oh-ho! See, Mike, it's your fault. You put her eyes on backwards.

MIKE: Well... uh, we'll look into that.

MARZIPAN: Plus everyone forgot to bring the birds in that day, so no one showed up. There were no extras.

MIKE: Uh, I don't think anyone wanted to hear your song, maybe.

MATT: Mmm, it was a pretty good song.

MIKE: Di— how was the, uh, did you market it very much? That concert? What promoter did you use?

MATT: {simultaneously} Pass out flyers?

MARZIPAN: Well...

MATT: Go down to the Whole Foods?

MARZIPAN: You've got to realize this is all acting. You know, this is just not what I usually do.

MATT: What do you usually do?

MARZIPAN: Well I'm usually gardening.

MATT: So is—is the playing a guitar all just part of your character?

MARZIPAN: Yeah. I mean, I play it sometimes, but...for this, you know. I'm—I have a much better guitar than that, usually.

MATT: {laughs} What's its name?

MIKE: {simultaneously} Carol... Is that just a prop?

MARZIPAN: It is a prop.

MATT: What's your guitar's name?

MARZIPAN: Uh, Joan.

MIKE: Carol and Joan, huh?

Easter Egg Commentary
MIKE: So here's your video...Marzipan.

MATT: The Cheat misspelled the name of your—your prop guitar there.

MIKE: Yeah, he calls it Carl.

MARZIPAN: I know, I know. That's okay.

MATT: Did you help, like, do the art direction on this one?

MIKE: {almost simultaneously} Have you ever been before?

MARZIPAN: Uh, uh, I did actually. I—I like The Cheat a lot. {slight pause} See? There was only one bird there.

Marzipan is the only girl in Free Country, USA, holding an on-again, off-again romantic relationship with Homestar Runner. A kind yet opinionated woman, Marzipan has a fondness for animals and making music and is passionately vegan and environmentally-conscious.

Characterization

180px-Marzysign.png

"I'm off to the Chinchilla protest."

Character Design and Conception

See also Marzipan Evolution

180px-Sketchbook_Two.PNG

Early designs for Marzipan, described in retrospect as "way too human."

Missy appears in-character as Marzipan on multiple strongbad email.exe DVD commentaries. In several commentaries, such as marzipan and date, she indicates that the Toons are simply a show that the characters are acting out rather than their real lives; later commentaries like montage no longer include this conceit.

Appearance

180px-Marzycouchslouch.png

Marzipan relaxes

Body Shape

See also Marzipan Being Compared to a Broom

96px-Marzipan_as_Lola.png

A bell[e]

Marzipan's lower body is almost always covered by a dress or similar garment, leaving little indication of the shape of her body. Her wide dress combined with narrow head/neck often lead to Marzipan being humorously compared to a broom.

MARZIPAN: Hi, I'm Marzipan, and this is my guitar Carol. Say hi, Carol. {performs an E major scale, ascending and descending} Ooh, E scale. Nice choice. When I'm not rockin' out, I like to dig in my garden and eat. I'm a fiercely independent woman, and I'm fiercely independent about the soy products that I choose. Homestar Runner and I {Homestar leans in frame} are one hot item when I say we are. {says one of the two at random}

  • MARZIPAN: And today we are.
    HOMESTAR RUNNER: Yay!
  • MARZIPAN: And today we are not.
    HOMESTAR RUNNER: Boo!

MARZIPAN: I like baby animals, and cats and dogs. But it makes me sad to see cats and dogs in the same room together. Okay, bye. I'm off to the Chinchilla protest. {She pulls out a protest sign that reads "Chinchillas OUT!! (of my basement)" and walks away}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {leaning in frame} {says one of the following at random, depending on which one was said before}

  • Boo! {if he says "yay" above} {leans out of frame}
  • Yay! {if he says "boo" above} {leans out of frame}

Fun Facts

180px-grinning_marzipan.png

Yes, she does have teeth .

  • The term marzipan describes a confectionery consisting primarily of ground almonds and sugar that derives its characteristic flavor from bitter almonds.
  • The character page title is a reference to Marzipan's song "Oh yeah yeah" from the email marzipan.
  • According to Strong Bad, Marzipan is allergic to pecans.
  • Marzipan has a cousin named Debra whom Strong Bad considers "hot".
  • As revealed in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 15.2, she has apparently had questionable surgery to have her nose removed.
  • In A Death Defying Decemberween, Homestar refers to Marzipan's mother as "Mrs. Marzipan", and implies that she is frequently divorced. Marzipan says her latest stepfather is named Seth and works in a "philosophy department", presumably at a university.
  • Strong Bad says that Marzipan has a "considerable resistance to death" in origins after being super-glued to Homsar and left for dead.
