Hanna-Barbera

"I'm the Captain Caaaaveman of the graveyard train!"

Hanna-Barbera was an animation studio founded by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who were originally known for the Tom & Jerry theatrical shorts produced for MGM. Hanna-Barbera productions were a staple of television animation from the 1960s to the 1990s, when a series of mergers and acquisitions eventually led to the studio's shuttering. In keeping with The Brothers Chaps' affinity for Saturday morning cartoons, references to these shows are made on occasion, though this typically amounts to little more than use of the studio’s sound effects.

Scooby-Doo

• A rejected Halloween costume for Marzipan shows her dressed up as Velma.
• Email long pants — Edga Jr. resembles Red Herring from A Pup Named Scooby Doo.
• Teen Girl Squad Issue 7 (DVD commentary) — The Brothers Chaps mention A Pup Named Scooby Doo.
• Email high school — "The Homestar Runner Mysfit-Steries" portray Homestar, Strong Mad, Marzipan, and Strong Bad as Scooby-Doo characters.
  • Homestar's appearance resembles that of Fred Jones.
  • Strong Bad's appearance resembles that of Shaggy Rogers. He says "There's no such thing as mysterious", despite the fact that in Scooby-Doo, Shaggy is a coward.
  • Marzipan's appearance resembles Daphne Blake. She uses the word "stampers", a play on Velma Dinkley's catchphrase "Jinkies!"
  • Strong Mad's appearance resembles Velma Dinkley's.
• The Next Epi-Snowed — Crack Stuntman's insistence that aspects of his real life like his house in Lake Tahoe and love of massage chairs be applied to his character Gunhaver is a possible reference to real-life voice actor Casey Kasem insisting that his character in the Scooby-Doo cartoon, Shaggy, be made a vegetarian like Kasem himself in 2002.
• Halloween Hijinks — "The Homestar Runner Mysfit-Steries" returns with a traditional unmasking sequence.
• 2022 Costume Pack Now Available — Homestar compares Marzipan's costume to Sonny Bono in a Scooby-Doo episode with "a pink and green cotton candy monster". Said monster appeared in Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

Smurfs

• The Best Decemberween Ever — The Cheat's head exploding when he opened a present is possibly a reference to The Smurfs, in which Jokey Smurf would give someone a present that would explode in the opener's face.
• Email haircut — In the "napping Strong Sad" Easter egg, Strong Sad says the names of Jokey Smurf and Brainy Smurf from the animated television series The Smurfs. (When Strong Sad mentions "that Carpenter Smurf", he is probably referring to Handy Smurf.)
• A Folky Tale (DVD commentary) — At one point, Matt Chapman mentions Brainy Smurf.

The Flintstones

• Rumble Red is a spoof on The Great Gazoo, a character from The Flintstones.
• Strong Badia the Free — In Cave Girl Squad, Ogg drives a car similar to the one from The Flintstones.
• Email unnatural (DVD commentary) — Strong Bad and Mike talk about clickers, both a mouse and a remote control, and Strong Bad mentions that his great-grandma would call the remote control clicker "the pterodactyl that flies out of a stone box that turns the TV on for you". This refers to how one of the gadgets on The Flintstones might be used.
• Teen Girl Squad Issue 7 (DVD commentary) — The Brothers Chaps mention The Flintstone Kids.

The Jetsons

• Email secret identity (DVD commentary) — Homestar Runner mentions that he loves The Jetsons (or as he calls it "The Jettisons").
• Strong Bad Gameways — Strong Bad warns Wii players to avoid "flotsam and Jetsons", using a sketch of a cross-eyed George Jetson to illustrate "Jetsons".

Other

• Main Page 8 — The tire screech sound used to simulate stopping is played when Homestar stops falling.
• The Luau — Three sound effects from the Hanna-Barbera cartoons are played here:
  • The sudden departure sound when everyone all runs away from Strong Bad's marshmallow to Marzipan's luau.
  • The bongo drum sound used to simulate running footsteps as everyone runs over to the luau.
  • The tire screech sound used to simulate stopping when everyone arrives at the luau.
• Email little animal — While Strong Mad chases Strong Bad through the house, they pass by the computer repeatedly in a manner similar to that of older cartoons, especially Tom and Jerry, where the background would paradoxically repeat itself over and over. This process was actually created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1947 and was done in animation to save time and money, since only a section of background had to be drawn and was then looped over and over.
• Email monument — In an Easter egg, Homestar tries to wear pants, but gets distracted by the Thnikkaman; when he runs off, it is accompanied by the sudden departure sound.
• Email radio — In the Old-Timey Easter egg, Old-Timey Strong Bad says, "Drat and double drat!", which is a catchphrase spoken by Dick Dastardly.
• Email high school — The Homestar Runner Mysfit-steries is a parody of the countless teenage detective shows produced by Hanna-Barbera. The Easter egg with the Old-Timey characters as "Romans living in Roman times" was inspired by the short lived series The Roman Holidays.
• Email theme song — The heart background is similar to the one used in The Powerpuff Girls.
• Most in the Graveyard — Homsar dresses as Captain Caveman.
• Halloween Hijinks — Marzipan is dressed as Captain Planet.
• Decemberweenvent Calendar Day 12 — The Cheat Commandos are drawn (and voiced) in a Hanna-Barbera style with Blue Laser Commander doing an impression of Snagglepuss and Reynold doing an impression of Boo-Boo from Yogi Bear.
