Most know what Marzipan meant. Especially given that she says "watch those hands"... Also, this isn't really the sort of thing we like to explain on the wiki. Family show, remember. Additional comments: I don't think The Brother Chaps would put something that explict on a kids site. Decline-ed!-Dead! Except they did...? The question is really whether we note it or not. It's not necessarily a kids' site. But I don't really think we need to note this. Besides the sexual meaning, it's just... well, not terribly earth-shattering info. I don't think people are going to get mad at a dictionary defenition cointaining a word with the letters S-E-X. While this doesn't merit being kept in because of it being too obvious, some of you guys are being more than a little ridiculous. How is "copping a feel" an explicit term? Why is the word "sex" typed the way it is? Please note that there is precedent for excluding this explanation for that reason: We have always chosen not to explain the terms "first, second and third base" from studying. Also, we do have very young users here, which is part of why we act as we do. Eh, mentions of mature topics themselves aren't all that bad, and there are certainly plenty of allusions to such on H*R, though nothing explicit obviously. I think sites like this tend to be a little "overprotective" of such concepts, and in a way that kinda exacerbates the problem. :P Mentioning mature topics is not bad per se, but there's no reason to do so if it's just explaining the joke. Anyone who's mature enough to get it is already going to get it Actually, I noticed the fact that Homestar doesn't have hands, and as such, it can be brushed of as a joke about his armless state. I removed the speculation about Homestar. It's not at all certain that Marzipan is even speaking to him (it could just as easily be Strong Mad). Instructions · Help Strong Bad and Delilah In this email, Strong Bad's imaginary girlfriend's name is spelled "Delilelia". However, in the following Quote of the Week, it was spelled "Delelilia". The word is spelled two different ways. It's valid. Arguments against: The Quote of the Week is an outtake, so I don't understand what's notable about this. Additional comments: It might be an outtake, but we're talking about a quote outtake. The fact that the spelling of a spoken word changed is interesting. I thought STUFF was for things that weren't easily verifiable? Outtake or not, the same name was in both QoW and the email, and unchanged in pronunciation. I noticed this "fun fact" is already listed in the fun facts section of the Quote of the Week page. A reference there really ought to be enough. It shouldn't appear here since the reference on that page is more appropriate and plenty adequate. What's wrong with it being on both pages? Short of it getting fixed before the next QoW (really unlikely) or it getting changed in the email itself (only a little more likely) it's not like it's going to be dated any time soon, and it's related to both. N.B.: It was spelled that way in the outtake to show how he slipped up while saying this. I've taken the liberty of tweaking to reflect this; if this changes your position, please change your vote. Well, I reverted it, because it was too much of a change. I definately don't think it there was a stumble there... he stumbled on "Vietnamese". It's probably a case of TBC simply forgetting exactly how they spelled a made-up word. Feel free to add it as a separate revision if you want, though... (For postierity, the change was adding "to reflect Matt's vocal stumble" to the end.) Yeah, I don't agree. The only stumble on "Delilelia"/"Delelilia" occurs the one time it's not written onscreen. Instructions · Help It might be a common phrase, see? Strong Bad's remark, "It's a mass pantsing, see?" is a reference to Edward G. Robinson in the movie Little Caesar. Robinson's gangster character, Rico, often ended his sentences with "see?". From WP: "In 2000 the United States Library of Congress deemed the original film 'culturally significant' and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry." That means it's not some obscure movie no one heard about. My first time hearing it was in a Looney Tunes cartoons, though I eventually traced it back to Edward G. Robinson. It's valid. Arguments against: I have heard "see?" said after a sentence WAY too many times. Seems like TTATOT to me. This "see?" style of speech is very common in Chicago and New York, and is not limited to the mafia. Additional comments: First arg for: I'm not saying it ISN'T, ultimately, a reference to Little Caesar, but I've heard "see?" in several places in reference to the movie, and I thought maybe TBC heard it from another place and referenced THAT. True, but you could say that about pretty much every reference. Remember in lady fan when the Strong Bad in the comic strip said "If that floozy's not all up ons after that, you gotta drop her like a trig class, see??!!??!" Arguments against: Additional comments: This reminds me of the "Worst Mayonnaise Party Ever" STUFF revision from secret identity, which was phrased almost identically to this: paraphrased, "Worst (whatever) Ever refers to Valley Girl speech and was popularized by Comic Book Guy". What makes this different? It just explains the origin, then tries to tie a reference to it. That will work! Umm... what? Instructions · Help Are you guys having a killer time? "Strong Sad and Deborah" may be a reference to Napoleon Dynamite, in which Deborah is a main character who goes to a dance. From: senior prom Posted on: 02:59, 4 May 2006 (UTC) Arguments for: In both cases, you have two very unpopular people who have few friends. Arguments against: Seems like a stretch to me. All the other main characters went to the same dance, including Napoleon, and Deb was not his date. Not specific enough. Last time I checked, Deborah was a pretty common name. Besides, if they wanted to reference Napoleon, they would have said "Deb" instead of "Deborah", as the character is referred to "Deb" throughout the whole movie. Even then it would still be a stretch. Additional comments: Shouldn't it be Strong Sad and Deborah? Unlike usual, Homestar remembered Strong Sad's name and forgot Z's. Fixed. Although I don't agree with the fact, people should stop using "too recent" as an argument against any reference (unless, of course, the reference is more recent than the Homestar Runner 'toon in question.) Jurassic Park III got a reference in a Homestar Runner 'toon, and it's from 2001, which isn't that much older than Napoleon Dynamite. And since when do they not refer to anything popular? I removed that argument entirely for these reasons. As creator of this fun fact, I surrender. I half suspected this might be the result, which is why I put this directly on STUFF instead of the actual page. I don't know whether I should clear this out, so I'll leave it to the sysops. Because it is typically the final dance in high school, most people only attend the senior prom once. From: senior prom Posted on: 18:36, 3 May 2006 (UTC) Arguments for: This is notable, as Marzipan's experience implies continuity with previous years and that she has attended this prom more than once. And unless one of the cases below is true, this doesn't mesh with real life very well at all. It's worth noting the difference between her experience and most people's RL experiences, regardless of reason. This may be useful information for people who are not familiar with senior proms (e.g., people in other countries than the US). Arguments against: There are a number of explanations: She and Homestar are in different years, and she went to both. Homestar got held back over and over, and Marzipan went to each one. Marzipan herself was held back. Marzipan simply heard about the event she's referring to happening multiple years. Marzipan went multiple years with other people. She was on the prom committee. In addition to the above, people generally go twice: their junior and senior years. Traditionally, both classes are invited, as the junior class throws the party for the departing senior class. It is only their senior prom once, but it is a senior prom multiple times. This is too nitpicky for a throwaway joke. The concept of "school" in the HSR universe is unconventional in many unnotable ways. It is not surprising if none of the HSR characters ever graduates; they are never seen doing homework. Lots of people attend more than one senior prom in RL, either in different years or at different schools, or both. She could also be referring to her junior prom. Additional comments: What does the list of explanations in Args Against have to do with this fact? The fact isn't debating the plausibility of Marzipan's multiple proms, but rather relating how this would be different to real-life experiences. Because it's not all that different from real-life experiences. I know plenty of people who attended multiple senior proms. What's more, one of those explanations makes the fact in question patently false anyway (the one where she merely heard about senior proms past). Regardless of whether you -attend- multiple senior proms, i'm pretty sure you have to actually -be- a senior in order to be eligible as prom king/queen. and Marzy's wording implies that this would be at least the third time it's happened. Strong Bad said they crashed this Senior Prom and many others. They aren't high school aged or going to their own senior prom. Marzipan comments that "as always," she and Homestar are the only couple at the prom. Apparently they go every year and have for a while. For what it's worth, some high schools (mine included) don't even have a senior prom. That's a good point. Instead of this fact, perhaps a FF in the explanations section about senior proms in general would be appropriate. I added an informational fact to the article and crossed out the corresponding argument above; so, the informational value of this fact has been covered already. It seems to me that TBC aren't actually referring to a high school senior prom, but rather a prom for senior citizens, especially judging by Strong Bad's prize for being Prom Queen. Knowing how weird the Homestarniverse it, it seems likely that there's just a senior (or senor) prom every year that they all go to. There's no real need for their to be n actual explanation or high school. As someone who went to multiple senior proms...if this is patently false, why hasn't it been removed? My parents didn't have a senior prom. The junior class took the prom fund and took a class trip instead. Seriously. Seriously, this would be the lamest fun fact ever. And the factuality is dubious to begin with. I've seen worse (such as a fact made years after Bubs' introduction that stated at the end, "Is it possible that Bubs is greedy?" as less fun and "Aunt Gert is based on sb_email 22" as less factual.)
