In 1939, MGM released The Wizard of Oz, a cinematic adaptation of L. Frank Baum's fantasy novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It grossed $3 million and won two Academy Awards. Numerous airings on television solidified its classic status. Several references to The Wizard of Oz have appeared in the Homestar Runner body of work.

References

• Fortune Cookies — One of the fortunes reads, "Pay no attention to the man in the parentheses." This refers to the Wizard's exclamation, "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"
• A Decemberween Pageant — Marzipan asks The Cheat to stop crying because he might rust, like how Dorothy tells the Tin Man when he cries.
• Malloween Commercial — One of the Sad Kids dresses as the Wicked Witch of the West.
• Thy Dungeonman II — If you attempt to search the hay after obtaining the bread, the game's narrator will mock you saying, "If thou only hadst a brain, thou would remember searching it quite thoroughly already." The first part of this is based on "If I Only Had a Brain".
• Email origins — When Señor and Mr. Bland are crushed in the scene depicting the origin of Bubs' Concession Stand, the manner in which their legs stick out is as that of the Wicked Witch of the East when she is crushed by Dorothy's house.
• 8-Bit is Enough — Gel-Arshie repeats the Wicked Witch when he enters the lava pool and exclaims, "I'm melting! I'm melting!"
  • Additionally, when Strong Bad wakes up in the field after defeating Trogdor, he tells each character individually that they were in his dream, like Dorothy does when she wakes up in Kansas.
• The Homestar Runner Enters The Spooky Woods (Easter egg) — Strong Mad, dressed as Pink Floyd's The Wall, name-drops The Wizard of Oz in reference to the urban legend stating that Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon can sync with the film.
