- This article is about "Jam" as a musical term. For the other uses of the word, see Jam.
Number One Jam is a phrase used within the Homestar Runner body of work as a description of a song by either The Brothers Chaps or a character. The term is often used in a self-referential context, so there is nothing to verify whether or not a song is actually a number one jam. However, the claim is sometimes verified, as in time capsule, when Stinkoman remarks "It tastes like a number one jam" after eating the Grumblecakes single.
Appearances
- Everybody to the Limit — "The #1 Summer Jam" (description on the Toons Menu)
- Ballad of The Sneak — "The #1 Summer Jam from 1936" (description on the Toons Menu)
- Email time capsule — Strong Bad puts a cassette tape with one of his number one jams about Grumblecakes in his time capsule. Then, Stinkoman eats the cassette tape, thinking that it's a Power Crunch, and says, "It tastes like a number one jam!"
- In rock opera, this line is pulled out of context to form the sentence "Positate without pizzaz and jam!"
- Email rampage — Coach Z raps that his lyrical rampage is "the number one jam on all the stations".
- Email alternate universe — Strong Bad and his doppelgängers record a number one jam.
- An Important Rap Song — "Download All Our Number One Jams!!" appears at the end.
- Field Day Intro — Strong Bad decides to give the audience the "number one jam of the summer".
- Yahoo Store — The message on the front page described Strongbad_email.exe Disc Five as "the number one jam of the summer".
- Fish Eye Lens — Coach Z, worried about how long it has been since the last number one jam, gets Strong Bad to rap with him to make a new one.
- The Main Page Message advertising the toon read "new #1 jam!", and the Quote of the Week consisted of the full song with the description "GET THE NEW #1 JAM!".
- Deleteheads Download — The April 16, 2025 edition of the newsletter lists Back to a Website as a "#1 Jam".
Variations
Occasionally, "jam" will be used to refer to music without qualifying it as "Number One".
- Everybody Knows It — Puppet Homestar Runner tells The Cheat to "mash play on that jambox". The Jam Box then reappears in several other toons.
- Strong Sad's Lament — Strong Sad states that he'll take his washboard and jam with Francis Scott Key instead.
- Puppet Homestar recorded a series of songs with They Might Be Giants, collectively titled "Puppet Jam".
- Email cheatday — Bubs tries to cut demos for two of Strong Bad's songs, the latter of which he calls a good jam.
- In an Easter egg, Bubs and Coach Z cut a demo as the Two-O-Duo. Coach Z remarks, "I got fresh jams."
- Halloween Potion-ma-jig — Dressed as Theo Huxtable, Coach Z raps, "Jammin' on the one!"
- The Brothers Chaps wrote a song with this name prior to launching Homestar Runner.
- Email road trip — Strong Bad takes a CD of Jammin' Tunes with him in the Gremlin.
- Happy Hallow-day — The skull in the spooky woods sprouts a rainbow afro and says, "A-jam on it!"
