And so, The Cheat mashed play on an extremely expensive jambox.

There have been many occurrences of "mashing" buttons throughout the Homestar Runner body of work, generally in place of the more common words "push" and "press". In the southern United States (including Georgia, home of The Brothers Chaps), this is a common slang usage of the term, so initially the Chaps may have been using the word naturally rather than intending for it to become a recurring gag.

Appearances

• Debut: Email 1 step ahead — The player is instructed to "mash spacebar" to peg a defenseless Strong Sad.
• Everybody Knows It — Homestar Runner tells The Cheat to "mash play on that jambox" prior to starting his song.
• Email flashback — The storybook that Strong Bad reads ends with The Cheat mashing play on an "extremely expensive jambox".
• strongbad_email.exe Disc One — If the viewer remains on the main menu for too long, The Paper tells them to "make your selection and mash GO, moron!"
• Email alternate universe — Strong Bad orders The Cheat to "mash go on that blender!" in order to activate their alternative universe machine.
• Email senior prom — Crashing the 'Entrapment All Up On the Moon' Dance, Strong Bad reveals a remote control, explaining that "...when I mash go on it, everybody's pants will POOF AWAY!"
• Weclome Back — Strong Bad informs the Lappy 486 that they will skydive out of an airplane once he mashes 'record' on their camera. After realizing he pressed the wrong button, preventing the email he checked during the jump from being recorded, he gets mad at himself for having made the "mash stop when you think you're mashing record and mash record when you think you're mashing stop" mistake.
• Marshmallow's Last Stand (DVD commentary) — Homestar claims that his last line in the toon was prerecorded on tape, with Mike Chapman suggesting that Pom Pom hit "mash play" on a jambox in order to play the line.
• Blue Laserdisc Challenge — During the game's intro, the player is told to "take control of Blue Laser Commander by mashing left or right on your LaserDisc remote when you see this flashing style."
• Guitar Hero II — On the loading screen for the song Trogdor, Strong Bad advises the player: "For squeadlies, mash on the trembalo."
• Viidelectrix version of Duck Guardian One — At the beginning of each round, the game instructs the player to "point hereabouts and mash A to start."
• Teen Girl Squad Issue 13 — As Tompkins presses buttons on his Game Boy, the word "m.a.s.h." appears intermittently.
• Telltale Games — A press release describes TROGDOR! as an "arcade peasant-masher".
• Nintendo Power Interview - July 2008 — Denying that anybody would miss the physical manuals that came with older video games, Strong Bad claims that "anyone who can't figure out how to mash a bunch of buttons on a game pad shouldn't be indulging in video-gamery in the first place."
• Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People — The tutorials explain the controls by telling the player to mash specific buttons on their controller.
• Homestar Ruiner — Strong Bad wonders what will happen if he mashes the erase button on the camera at the race track.
• CollegeHumor Interview - 15 Sep 2008 — Matt Chapman says that Homestar's favorite video game would be Microsoft Decathlon, "a game where you just mashed keys as fast as you could, and Homestar would love doing that with his head."
• 8-Bit is Enough — Homestar mentions he used his lucky quarter to beat the game Street Masher.
• Email too cool — Senor Cardgage asks Strong Bad to mash play on the air freshener to record his character video.
• Disk 4 of 12 - FriendlyWare — Strong Bad, amused that FriendlyWare keeps asking him to "strike" keys, suggests that the words "press" and "mash" hadn't been invented by the early eighties.
