H*R Reference In New Book

I just started reading the latest from one of my favorite authors, Orson Scott Card. It's called Empire, and page 19 begins thusly:

"My head a-splode," said one of the wittier students, and everyone laughed again.

Can it be agreed upon that this is a bonafied reference? I was wondering if there's a place on this website to record this type of thing. -TDK 14:57, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

It sounds like a direct reference to me. It would go on one of the Sightings pages, probably Other Sightings, since we don't have a Book Sightings page.

Edit Conflicts Noted in Summaries and Posts

Can I just mention how un-useful some edit summaries are? I mean, it's good that you use an edit summary, but we should always try to make them meaningful.

Specifically, stuff like "Edit Conflict x2" or similar are not good edit summaries. We all get them, big deal. What is the nature of the edit you finally got on the wiki? A typo fix? A reply? An agreement/disagreement? I'm not intending to point to anyone in particular - I see these often from a lot of people.

On a tangental but related topic: what is the purpose of inticating in bold letters at the start of a Talk post that you were edit conflicted? Is there a meaningful reason to do this that I'm missing? Or is just unnecessary clutter on the page? - Qermaq - (^T/C) 00:21, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

I think the only time you need to mention being edit conflicted is if your message has changed because of what's mentioned when you got conflicted. Or something. --DorianGray

If, as a result of an edit conflict, my talk post doesn't follow the one immediately preceding it, I usually mark it as an edit conflict so people know that the post was meant to come right after a different post than it actually comes after. Otherwise, it's not really necessary. Heimstern Läufer

Wouldn't saying "In response to Heimstern's 00:28 post" (as I am here) be a more clear way to indicate this than mentioning the edit conflict? I mean, in this case, my post is separated from the one I want to reply to since other posts have occurred and there's no convenient way to insert this into the above without disrupting other trains of thought, not due to an edit conflict. Why not take a similar route with edit-conflicted replies, which are essentially subject to that exact same issue? - Qermaq - (^T/C)

I've been saying this for a while now. Noting an edit conflict in the actual wiki text should be a last resort. Upon being edit-conflicted, one should ask, does my post still flow with the other posts? Does the fact that I got a conflict need to be pointed out? Is there any way I can rephrase what I wrote to make it fit better? Yes, rephrasing does take a little more time and effort, and occasionally someone beats you to the punch and says what you were going to say. Archiving Weeklies?

Anyone think it's time to archive the Sketchbook, Fanstuff, and Quote of the Week? meaning, move the 2006 entries to a seperate 2006 archive? I was wondering why it hadn't been done yet. - Dr. Clash (how do you people know the exact time you posted to put it after your name, anyway?)

I also think that sounds reasonable. Agreeing with what Shwoo said, type three tildes (~~~) to leave just your signature, and leave four tildes (~~~~) to leave your signature plus a timestamp. Incidentally, five tildes leaves a timestamp only.

Main page image

The Bubs image is a spoiler (it reveals the main joke of the toon). Spoilers should not be on the main page, and so I switched it with a unique image from the toon that doesn't give anything away. — It's dot com 21:54, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

HRwiki.com Deutschland edition

I probably missed something here but why is it that [1] takes me to some german Enzyklopädie? I thought we had all 3 .com/.net/.org domains? Was it hijacked? Has it always been this way? I dont remember it being this way. --Stux 02:28, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Memo to HRWiki power users et al.

Hey guys. I've noticed that not a whole lot of people are aware of this, so I'm letting you know that I created a template called {{newsbemail}} that gives us a really big head start on the first edit of a new sbemail article. For example, when starting the article for unnatural, all you need to type is {{subst:newsbemail|166}}. So check it out, try it out in the sandbox, and improve it if you can. Capital Sbemail titles?

With the release of this new New Stuff feature on the Toons menu, I wonder, are the sbemails meant to be capitalized? This image clearly spells unnatural, strong badathlon, and looking old capitalized. Is this the way they should be spelled, or is this something to ignore? Bluebry 02:32, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I believe the last time we talked about this was on Talk:Strong Bad Email#No caps. Opinions are heavily divided: I still see lowercase Lappy menu e-mail titles as non-binding aesthetics; some would rather keep article case based on how the first official released title looks. One way or the other, we're gonna have to have piped links somewhere. Since the Strong Bad Email menu can and does have some capital letters, I maintain that we should continue using it as our official capitalization. — It's dot com 05:14, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

I much prefer them lowercase. I can't explain why, except that I feel it looks god-awful in uppercase. That's just my opinion, though. --DorianGray

Dorian, I have to simply state that regardless of your feelings on what the aesthetics are, whatever is presented in the sbemail menu should be considered canon. They can feel free to also present them in other styles elsewhere, but as we are documenting the sbemails, we should use those titles. - Qermaq - (^T/C)

HRWiki OS-tan revealed to the world!

HRWiki-tan

As per kai lyn's talk page, I have created a cute little drawing of an OS-tan representing HRWiki! This is just for fun to see what people think of it, but I thought if Wikipedia got to have one, we should too! The full explanation of her appearance is on the afformentioned talk page, but for those of you who are too lazy to go there, I'll explain it now (pardon the copy/paste job).

Okay here, let me explain. First, on the right arm I accidentally used a marker that was too thick before I realized that I had a smaller one to use. My mistake. :-( The logo on her bottom braid is, very small, H*R and the stars were for just what Kai lyn said, HomeSTAR Runner. Three Homestar faces are on her outfit, the loop braid and the boots; the body of the boots represents Strong Bad and she's wearing a Homestar shirt. Her hair and ribbons are the main colors of the HRWiki site, blue and white. The skirt represents bees, which the HRWiki users act a lot like (working together for a common goal, honey or info about H*R, and delivering a quick sting to trolls). I just did whatever for her arms. The utility belt has a badge that says "IP", for her to use when she's not logged in, an easter egg, and a book of references. She also holds a notebook with all of HRWiki's articles in it. The hairstyle doesn't really apply to anything, I just made it up and have used it on three characters now. Oh yes, and please pardon the fact that I can't draw hands.

Adding it to every page would be reasonably simple to automate... it probably wouldn't be worth the effort to go through and do it by hand, but using a bot to do it would be relatively simple. It's just a script written in Python... it would be possible to get it to recognise the '''Date:''' at the top of the page, parse the rest of the line as a date and calculate the day of the week from that.
