Marvel Comics (or simply Marvel) is a comic book publisher most well-known for superheroes.
Founded in 1939 as Timely Comics, the company rose to prominence in the 1960s with "The Marvel Age of Comics" — driven by writer-editor Stan Lee, Marvel's comics increased focus on characterization and more mature issues to appeal to older readers than the child audiences comic books had been known for. Famous Marvel characters and series include Spider-Man, the Avengers, and the X-Men. Numerous TV shows and movies have been based on Marvel comics, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the most prominent example.
