This Island Earth was the basis for Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie, and TBC have been known to make references to MST3K before (like in A Jorb Well Done). This is a tough one...I'm going to vote for it, but I'm adding in a "most likely" cause. I think the MST3K movie needs to be mentioned in the fact before I'll accept it. This Island Earth was a VERY obscure movie before the MST3K movie. Arguments for: This version includes the MST3K reference, which is where This Island Earth was popularized. Before MST3K made fun of it, it was a very obscure movie. Given the similarity of the pronunciation, the sci-fi theme of the email, and TBC's known appreciation of MST3K, I think this makes sense. Arguments against: It's still just a misprounciation. Nothing else is said about this. Additional comments: Suggestion: Remove the phrase "(one of a race of humanoid ants)" from the fact. It's a little redundant and isn't necessary to get the point of the fact. Removed. I never thought they looked much like ants anyway. Chris Impellitteri is exactly the sort of musician--an 80's and 90's rock guitarist--that Strong Bad would reference. Arguments against: Additional comments: There's too many of these rock musicians for it to be a coincidence (Impellitteri, Satriani, Anselmo, ...) - maybe they should all be merged together into one fact? Additional comments: Although combining them like this is good, now there's no mention of where each is referred to. Although it is possible to go back and examine the email for them, it might take someone who hasn't seen the email many times a little while (one is in an easter egg, etc.). There are plenty of facts like this in RWR for various toons where you read it and think "huh? where is that for" until you remember that pretty much every browser has a find-in-page button... That said, the fact's been reworded. I'd say it needs further revision, mentioning the bands for Impellitteri (Impellitteri) and Anselmo (Pantera). All that can be gotten from the Wikipedia links (or Impellitteri's homepage, since he doesn't have a Wikipedia article), it doesn't really add to the fact... Part of this is in direct conflict with a STUFFed fact below. So, which Anselmo is it, Rene or Phil? See the comment below: "There's nothing stopping both this and the Phil Anselmo reference from being on the page - it's two completely separate things it could be, not the wide variety of similar things that TTATOT applies to." I had earlier made the same comment as you, then retracted it in acknowledgement that the fact could even be two simultaneous, intentional references. If we're going to run with both facts, I'd suggest putting them together - eg. "The Proud Anselmo ... refer to famous rock musicians ... Phil Anselmo. // The Proud Anselmo may also be a reference to Rene Anselmo." What I think is that all these names are Italian, which coincides with Strong Bad's "Don't, like, the italians have a space program?". Arguments against: I'm switching my vote to "Against" for this fact because it's now accounted for in the multi-fact above. Yeah, it doesn't make sense to have the fact above and this fact in the same place. Additional comments: I'm not sure about this. I thought it was a joke about Alpha Centauri, the star. I thought it was a mangling of Saturn. Actually, "Satriani 5" is closer to the names of various planets that the Enterprise crew would visit in ST:TOS. I'd say this name is a reference to both Joe Satriani and to various sci-fi plots, although the latter probably goes without saying. It's possible for it to be all of the above. A play on the sci-fi ring (hehe) of Saturn and Centauri, and an awareness of Joe Satriani. (The alternative is that they made up a name out of thin air, it happened to be identical to a popular rock guitarist, and they had never heard of him.) Yeah, Occam's Razor and all that. ;) I would even argue that the words "most likely" could be removed from the fact. Instructions · Help Hap Arnold Harold "Strap" Coopmore is possibly a reference to U.S. Air Force General Henry "Hap" Arnold who served on the committee that would become NASA. This is likely a real-world reference since The Cheat has never been associated with straps or the name "Strap" before. Both names are five syllables long and "Harold" is a concatenation of "H. Arnold" omitting the -n-. This email touches on NASA's beginnings by describing the beginnings of SBASAF and closely following the format of NASA's early propaganda about the space program, as well as paroding Star Trek and other similar sci-fi and cultural references at the time. It makes perfect sense for the character names in here to have something to do with one of these categories - in The Cheat's case, a reference to a real-life person who helped form NASA. Arguments against: It is rather esoteric and most esoteric references from TBC are inside references. It's a coincidence. Additional comments: More info on Hap Arnold including the NACA. Instructions · Help Proud Anselmo The "Proud Anselmo" is most likely a reference to Rene Anselmo, the driven creator of the commercial satellite industry. From: space program Posted on: 21:25, 14 November 2005 (UTC) Arguments for: Makes sense for a space program bit. This reference is more relevant than Phil Anselmo, who is/was a heavy metal musician. Arguments against: It's far more likely for TBC to make references to musicians than titans of industry. Rene Anselmo created the satellite industry, but satellites aren't mentioned at all in this e-mail. Additional comments: It's already been noted in Fun Facts that the ship was named after Phil Anselmo, though the reason isn't given there. I didn't notice it was already there, but I think this reference makes much more sense than Phil Anselmo. Although I'm sold on this interpretation, I think it should read "... is most likely a reference to...", in deference to the many other things it could be (and our lack of absolute certainty). What about also adding "It may also be a reference to Phil Anselmo" as a sub-bullet? I say it's more a Phil Anselmo reference. Since this is a cartoon, how about Tony Anselmo, the Disney animator who also provides the voice for Donald Duck? It's all about context. There are a lot of Anselmos out there, but it's more likey Rene since it's in the context of outer space. I say that's much more of a stretch. When TBC aren't making references to specific people, they're usually referencing musicians. There's extremely little to link "Proud Anselmo" to a Disney animator - much more likely for Rene Anselmo (context) and Phil Anselmo (musician precedent). A Thought occours to me. If the above fun fact is true (the one about Satrianis refering to Joe Satriani), then Anselmo = Phil Anselmo. We've got to remember this is Strong Bad's Space Program, and he's much more likley to name cool things after guitar heros than businessmen. It also agress with his taste for the Limozeen in Space cartoon; rock stars in space. Now I propsed this fun fact and even though it's getting support I think it's only fair, for accuracy, to consider this agrument. Arguments against: Astronauts in the early space program were selected from military test pilots. They retained their rank and service affiliation (e.g. Col. John Glenn, USMC; Capt. Jim Lovell, USN). From www.nasa.gov: "NASA selects two kinds of astronauts for space flights: pilot astronauts and mission specialist astronauts. Pilot astronauts command and pilot shuttles. Most pilot astronauts are test pilots from the United States Air Force, Navy, or Marine Corps. They are paid according to their military rank." The most recent space shuttle commander, Eileen Collins, was a colonel in the U.S. Air Force. The most recent space shuttle pilot, James M. Kelly, was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. NASA is a civilian organisation but the fact that Strong Bad has a military-esque rank does not in itself determine whether SBASAF is a military or civilian organisation. It is just that the word "but" in the suggestion is misleading. Additional comments: Added here rather than the page - I'm not sure if this is noteworthy. Either way, this fact really doesn't make a lot of sense. Perhaps a revision is in order? The first argument for is patently false. Since this whole item is based on the reasoning in that argument, it has serious flaws and cannot be on the page without some revision, if at all. Despite the obvious reference to NASA, this email is much more a parody of Star Trek and other similar sci-fi series/movies, in which the main characters have military ranks (usually based on the Navy). A large part of the email also parodies military recruitment and educational filmstrips from the 50s and 60s. As the space race was getting underway, NASA engaged in quite a bit of this sort of propaganda, which in and of itself was regarded by many as a tool of the military. NASA has in many ways retained the perception that it is closely tied to the military, even if it isn't a military organization directly.
