The Field

The Field is just a plain, grassy field in Free Country, USA where various toons take place. Homestar Runner confirms that the objects in the background are indeed bushes and not hills in Flash is Dead!. It is the home of The Stick. There also seems to be one or two telephone poles which are used mostly to hang signs. In Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, it is directly connected to Strong Badia, Bubs' Concession Stand, the Gremlin, the brick wall, and the Snap Shak.

Evolution

The Field is rarely consistent between any two toons (sometimes even between scenes in a single toon), often looking slightly different than in its last appearance; sometimes it goes back to an earlier design (either completely or partially), sometimes it's flipped horizontally, and sometimes the colors are tweaked slightly. It has also had several stylizations, which can be seen below.

	This is the first design.	July 1996	All appearances from Original Book to The Reddest Radish	The Field's style changed in nearly every toon between Original Book and The Reddest Radish. Sometimes the colors were brighter, and sometimes the grass and sky were more detailed. However, all of these styles had something in common; there were no bushes.
	This is the second design.	c. 2000	A Jumping Jack Contest; Theme Song Video	This is the Field's first consistent design. Swirly clouds are sometimes seen in the sky, and slightly lighter streams of clouds are also visible. There are brighter colors and visible blades of grass. In Theme Song Video, the outline is colored instead of black to match the updated animation style.
	This is the third design.	c. 2001	All appearances from The Luau to i love you	There are now bushes in the background. The blades of grass are no longer visible. While none can be seen in this image, swirly clouds are still seen occasionally.
	This is the fourth design.	c. 2002	Most appearances from The Interview to original; imaginary	The bushes have more detailed shading and overlap the grass, which is also shaded. The streams of clouds are blurry. The swirly clouds stopped appearing in 2002, appearing for the last time in invisibility. In many of its appearances, the streams of clouds are closer in color to the sky, and sometimes they lack the usual blur. In pizzaz, the streams of clouds are thinner. In Cool Things, A Folky Tale, and all appearances from strong badathlon to rough copy, the bushes have soft shadows under them.
	This is the fifth design.	July 2006	Weclome Back; Quality Time with Cardboard Homestar	The soft shadows under the bushes from Cool Things have been combined with the thinner cloud streams from pizzaz.
	This is the sixth design.	August 2006	No Hands On Deck!; bike thief	The stream of clouds is more curved. Brightness emanates from the center of the background. The shadows under the bushes are gone. In No Hands On Deck!, this design's sky is combined with the bushes of the fourth design.
	This is the seventh design.	September 2007	pizza joint	The colors are brighter and the bushes are more realistically jagged and bumpy, as well as once again appearing to be behind the horizon line. The streams of clouds have gone back to being thinner and less curved, but are also are less pronounced. This design was used only once before it was changed to the next design.
	This is the eighth design.	October 2007	All appearances from business trip	The streaky clouds and gradient sky (originally from Drive-Thru, see below) have returned.

Other Stylizations

These stylizations have only been used a few times, and do not quite count as evolution.

	This was used during the fifth Field design.	March 2007	Drive-Thru	The bushes have a flatter, more cartoonish look, combined with the gradient sky from the chair. This is the only time the bushes are brighter than the ground.
	This was used during the current Field design.	December 2020	Index Page	The bushes are more consistently oval-shaped. There are no outlines; each bush is instead separated by a line of shading. The sky is four shades of blue, separated by curved lines. Brightness emanates from the center of the background. This is the only time the ground has veered off in a direction rather than staying straight. This is also the first time since invisibility in 2002 where swirly clouds can be seen, albeit drawn more simplistically.
