We've always thought the joke was on Bubs because he was giving something of greater value away when you purchased something of lesser value (like in the old fact about the king below), but really the joke's on us because you can't buy something of equal or lesser value in the first place. Arguments against: He says "Of equal or lesser value." If you got two Deluxe cups, he would have to honor his request then. He never specifies that the free cup has to be a normal one. And how do you know there's not a "super-deluxe" size? Additional comments: Note: If this is accepted, we are saying that the following old fact (also from part-time job) is incorrect and should be deleted: "Notice Bubs' promotion is the opposite of what would be sensible: You can get two cups of ice while paying only for the one that costs less or the same. This is the same kind of logic which allows The King of Town to have 'earned a free combo meal by purchasing one of equal or lesser value'." "a free cup of ice" is taken to mean a normal one, and a deluxe cup is neither equal to nor less than a normal one. It would be like McDonald's saying "get a free hamburger with a purchase of a Quarter Pounder of equal or lesser value." You can't buy a Quarter Pounder that's the same price as or less expensive than a regular hamburger. It's pretty clear that it was taken to be a normal one, but you have no reason to believe that it was besides simple conclusion jumping. And the wording in any real restaurant could be "Buy a large drink, get a free drink of equal or lesser value", in which case, you could in theory buy two of the same-sized drink, or a large and a small. There would be no reason to assume that the free drink would have to be medium unless explicitly told otherwise, and then, why add the "of equal or lesser value"? Arguments for: Addresses the issue raised above. Arguments against: TBC are in the business of creating jokes. Where's the joke in this? This is too long and boring. This isn't the offer. The offer is "a free cup of ice with purchase of a deluxe cup of ice of equal or lesser value than the free cup of ice." The free cup of ice is a normal cup of ice. (see arguments in the original). Additional comments: Depending on your interpretation of whether "a free cup of ice" includes deluxe cups, this version is more accurate. So ... Bubs has unwittingly created a two-for-one bargain at his expense. Aren't we back to where we started? This revision still accounts for the possibility that he will never honor the offer. If he does give a deluxe cup as a free cup, then he only gives a deluxe cup. If he does not give a deluxe cup, then he doesn't give anything. It's a subtle difference, but this revision takes the most possibilites into consideration, and therefore is better.
