It will take even a year to get the wiki fully started and having enough content to be a good resource. «Rob» 11:48, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Pertmywert, domain names cost about nine dollars for one year.  I think you could realisticly save up for one in a fairly short period of time.User:Tom  --  Tom 20:32, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure all you need to sign up for PayPal is a bank account. It takes a bit of work to get it set up, but once it is, it's like an extra account for online transactions. That's all I can suggest. ⇔Thunderbird[/wiki/Special:Contributions/Thunderbird_L17 ⇔] 08:11, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, correction. I'm pretty sure your bank has to have online services. Check your local bank, see if you can sign up for online banking. That's what you need. I know at least Royal Bank of Canada and Scotiabank both support online banking. Most big ones do. Small chains I'm not too sure about though. I'm not quite sure where to put this idea, so i'll put it here. What about, instead of just the tobedeleted tag, we have a matching one for talk pages? Something like: talktobedeleted  or something? The only reason i'm suggesting this is because when you put the  tobedeleted  tag on troll talk pages, the link takes you to a Talk:Talk:(pagename) page. Stu may be inactive on the wiki, but he's far from inactive on the forum. Many of our admins do important things around here; they just may not be visible to some of our community members. Others are on hiatus for one reason or another. I guess I'm beating a dead horse now, but there's really no need to de-admin them unless we see suspicious behavior. You wikipedia link system is slightly broken. When you write Wikipedia:Homestar Runner it points to http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestar_Runner instead of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestar_Runner. It still works but eventually wikipedia may stop this workaround which so far is being preserved for histrorical reasons. Some discussion occured a couple of weeks ago about whether the old links should be done away with (they decided against it). Your site ought to change to the newer version just in case. I got an idea for a page: a complete timeline of every toon. When I first discovered H*R, I wanted to take it chronologically (which helps; e.g. you meet Homsar in the email that explains his name). However, I did it by simply going through the toons one genre at a time, overlooking some, then going through the sbemails from bottom to top. It would be nice to have something that showed where the toons fell in the chronology of sbemails. Aside from helping anyone who might be trying to do the same thing I did, it would be helpful to tell at a glance what predated what.
</dd></dl>

</dd></dl>
One difficulty is that some toons are currently labelled only with the month and year, or even just the year, but I imagine some detective work could figure those out.

<p>I'm not exactly sure if I'm allowed to post here, because I'm not a real member, but I'd just like someone to know that there is a new Halloween toon, and if someone could update the wiki accordingly... (I'd do it myself, but I'm horrible at Wiki-ing.) Thanks.

Hm... no, you're right, that's exactly what I was thinking of. It only goes back to sbemail #7, though; I guess I might make it a long-term goal to do some detective work on the release dates of the earliest days and update it. Yea, sadly that was the best I could come up with for certain (I used livejournals, and a bit of fark). The one thing further we could do, would be to estimate many of the other toons and main pages, such as the Halloween toons being C. October 31st, 2000, ect. But for those, I think it would be best to use C, to denote 'circa' or 'about', and perhaps B and A for before and after a certain date, if that becomes applicable. That too though, could only go so far. We won't be able to guess everything, just anything reasonable, probably mostly holiday toons. I'll try and get on it later if I have time, you're welcome to start it up too if you want. 2002 and 2003 are pretty much totally finished, maybe a bit of 2002 could be done, but 2001 and 2000 could use some guestimation. If you go to the livejournals site, you'll notice the topics and subjects slowly grow over 2001, 2002, and 2003, but by 2004 they start to shrink again, around the time of the Wiki's creation. Now they're just about back to the state they were in in 2002. It could just be a coincidence, or the Wiki may have just about replaced the use of the livejournals site. Also if you look at any subjects about 'what happened when' type questions, they usually end with something along the lines of 'you know we have a wiki... Right?' Although it does still have a nice exchange of various H*R type avatars and stuff, and cool news such as this. I even found Tom making a visit over there, letting them know about our 2005 pledge drive. Anyways, there's my big contribution to discussion for the day. I'ma go to bed now, probably. <p>It's still up, just <i>rrll rrll</i> slow. I just downloaded <a href="/index.php?title=Cool_Things" title="Cool Things">Cool Things</a>, and it took about 7 minutes to download, but it did finish. Whenever a server is that slow, some requests time out - it's not a case of the server going up or coming down, rather just the luck of the draw whether it gets to you before the ISP gives up. The symptoms are (to my eye) consistent with a server under heavy load - though why would the load to homestarrunner.com increase so dramatically, and without an update, too? Maybe the same people who were attacking us are now attacking them? The template to edit the What's new? section on the main page is found at the bottom of the list of Templates used on this page: when you edit it. But please, it's not for general pruning. Only for actualy updates of the site. — Lapper (talk) 21:28, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Also, KieferSkunk, the template you use is the one you used before, if that helps. — It's dot com 21:48, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Figured that. :)  I meant in a general sense, how do I get to the templates without knowing the direct link.  That helps.  Thanks. :) - KieferSkunk 22:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Plus a shortcut I always use, just click 'view source' on the main page, and below the source code box there should be links to all the Templates for that page. Same goes for if you edit a page, they're all right below the 'Save Page', 'Show Preview' buttons. That's what they're there for, so you can easily edit the templates on a page, without having to go searching all over for them. It's still up, just rrll rrll slow. I just downloaded Cool Things, and it took about 7 minutes to download, but it did finish. Domain

I know I sound like a scunge and all but, I have absolutely no way of paying for a domain. If someone took on this job I would add donation links and all to my website and the whole shibang. I know this is off topic to homestarrunner.com but this is the only place people view. – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 06:32, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

I don't think anybody here's going to want to pay for your own domain. —Gafaddict Image:Gafaddict sigpic.gif (Talk | Contribs.) 10:53, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
You never know, but I really doubt someone will pay for a domain for you. I think for now you should stay with what you've got. As long as your website works and people can use it, it can grow really big. If the site becomes really succesful, popular and have heaps of content, you can then think about getting a domain name and maybe paying for hosting. Remember that the H*R Wiki was originally just a subdomain of Joey's site (hrwiki.joeyday.com), which meant he didn't really pay anything extra for the wiki at first. Start small. It will take even a year to get the wiki fully started and having enough content to be a good resource. «Rob» 11:48, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
Pertmywert, domain names cost about nine dollars for one year. I think you could realisticly save up for one in a fairly short period of time. -- Tom 20:32, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
I have no way of paying them though. :( – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 02:56, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, some day then. -- Tom 04:35, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure all you need to sign up for PayPal is a bank account. It takes a bit of work to get it set up, but once it is, it's like an extra account for online transactions. That's all I can suggest. Thunderbird 08:11, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Does Suncorp count as a bank account? – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 22:12, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, correction. I'm pretty sure your bank has to have online services. Check your local bank, see if you can sign up for online banking. That's what you need. I know at least Royal Bank of Canada and Scotiabank both support online banking. Most big ones do. Small chains I'm not too sure about though. Thunderbird 22:17, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, just in a brief look at PayPal, I don't think that's the case, just an ordinary bank account will do. But maybe Thunderbird was looking harder than I was. (At any rate, Suncorp does have online banking.) Anyway, if you know your bank account number, take it to PayPal and see what happens! —AbdiViklas 22:24, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
LIAR! I have a suncorp account and it does have internet banking. And I am Australian. :P – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 10:21, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Um... I imagine you're responding to Thunderbird, but aren't you saying exactly what I said above you? Anyway, congratulations; looks like you're in business. —AbdiViklas 10:35, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I have changed my mind. I am gonna stay subdomain for a while. :-) – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 10:48, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Idea?

I'm not quite sure where to put this idea, so i'll put it here. What about, instead of just the tobedeleted tag, we have a matching one for talk pages? Something like: talktobedeleted or something? The only reason i'm suggesting this is because when you put the tobedeleted tag on troll talk pages, the link takes you to a Talk:Talk:(pagename) page. If this is a bad idea or we already have something like this or if it's a good idea, let me know. --smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 18:06, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

Earlier today, it was only at about 1,995,176 or so. By the end of the day, I think we might break 2,000,000 main page accesses!!! Going by PDT of course, none of this 'offical dateline' nonsense. And no east coast timezone either, I think my prediction needs the extra three hours. It would have been cooler if it coincided with Wikiday, but it's a good general marker anyways. 2 years, 2,000,000 main page views. (I know I'm ignoring the discrepency between starting with Wiki Tiki Tavi and starting main page view counting with Mediawiki). Any any case though, I'm hyped. It's a good marker. Inactive Admins

Um... the admins AgentSeeThroo, FortyTwo, FurryKef and Stu are inactive, and some of these are the original 5. They haven't made any contributions in months. What happens when an admin goes inactive? Does he get de-admined after a while? - Joshua 22:11, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

No. -- Tom 22:12, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Even FurryKef who has done next to nothing since he gained adminship? (I guess there's no reason to de-adminize anyone...) - Joshua 22:30, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Yes, even Furrykef. Why are you so concerned about this? -- Tom 00:06, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
The only reason to de-admin someone is if they actually harm the wiki in some way. Otherwise, you might as well leave them admin in case they come back. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 00:12, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
Or if they were to request to be taken off the roster. Then I'm sure JoeyDay would respect their wishes. But I don't think tha'd happen all to often. Thunderbird 01:00, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
I don't know why I cared so much, I guess its just awkward to me to have inactive admins. (Everything else I've been a major part of got rid of inactive admins.) But I see why NOT to get rid of inactive admins, so I'll just leave it at that. - Joshua 01:03, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
We have high hopes they'll all return someday. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 16:11, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Boy, we must be popular

I just happening to notice while trying to find a really good way to explain to a friend just what a wiki exactly is that if you search the web for the word "wiki" on Yahoo! in suggestions for refining your search near the top of the returns page, this very wiki is listed second and third! Yay! I guess that means we're doing something good. Or at least popular. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 22:51, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Wow, that's amazing! I'm surprised something like Wikiquote isn't third. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
Note that we aren't the second result, we are actually the forty-sixth. ACupOfCoffee is just saying that "homestarrunner wiki" is one of the "Also try" links in the results. -- Tom 14:47, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
I figured that. A lot of people must search for "Homestarrunner wiki" to make that noticible, though. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Wikipedia

You wikipedia link system is slightly broken. When you write Wikipedia:Homestar Runner it points to http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestar_Runner instead of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestar_Runner. It still works but eventually wikipedia may stop this workaround which so far is being preserved for histrorical reasons. Some discussion occured a couple of weeks ago about whether the old links should be done away with (they decided against it). Your site ought to change to the newer version just in case. Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2005-10-24/Multilingual redirects might be enlightening (that's a lot of wikipedia:'s in a row). (~~some guy at wikipedia who also happens to watch HR~~)

Yeah; I wasn't sure whether that was some kind of provision for people who preferred their 'Pedia in another language. My filtering service, while they have been convinced that they can't very well block "en.wikipedia~", have compromised by blocking "www.wikipedia~" (or maybe it's a relic they've overlooked). Either way, I can't use the links, and have to type in "en" by hand. —AbdiViklas 18:28, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Fixed. And I see that the Interwiki map was changed a while ago. Thanks. -- Tom 18:56, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Still seems broken. It works on this page but others (I noticed it at sb_email_22#Explanations) still point to the old url (maybe it's a cache issue though). ~~me again~~
Yeah, try a hard refresh. They all said en.wikipedia when I looked at them. — It's dot com 04:21, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

New Halloween Toon...

I'm not exactly sure if I'm allowed to post here, because I'm not a real member, but I'd just like someone to know that there is a new Halloween toon, and if someone could update the wiki accordingly... (I'd do it myself, but I'm horrible at Wiki-ing.) Thanks.

Build a Timeline?

I got an idea for a page: a complete timeline of every toon. When I first discovered H*R, I wanted to take it chronologically (which helps; e.g. you meet Homsar in the email that explains his name). However, I did it by simply going through the toons one genre at a time, overlooking some, then going through the sbemails from bottom to top. It would be nice to have something that showed where the toons fell in the chronology of sbemails. Aside from helping anyone who might be trying to do the same thing I did, it would be helpful to tell at a glance what predated what.

One difficulty is that some toons are currently labelled only with the month and year, or even just the year, but I imagine some detective work could figure those out.

So what about it, guys? Is it worth doing? And if so, what should I call it? Timeline? Chronology? —AbdiViklas 03:50, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Don't we already have a timeline? How is that different from H*R.com updates? — It's dot com 04:01, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Hm... no, you're right, that's exactly what I was thinking of. It only goes back to sbemail #7, though; I guess I might make it a long-term goal to do some detective work on the release dates of the earliest days and update it. But not today! —AbdiViklas 04:08, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
See also Talk:H*R.com updates 2001. -- Tom 06:52, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Thunderbird 07:15, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

LOL I tried. It was deleted today. No matter how I search, I don't see where/how the final decision was made there. This wiki does seem to operate rather like a clique ... --NERD42  email  talk   h²g²  pedia  uncyc  00:07, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Live Journals Side Note:

Thunderbird 07:15, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Editing the main page

Noticed that the message scroll on the main page includes "Messenger Bag Sale!", which links to a subpage on the Store that is not currently linked from the Store main page. The button leads to this page. - KieferSkunk 20:40, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Actually, KieferSkunk, you can edit the what's new panel. Just go here. Don't forget to update the main updates page as well, if it hasn't been already. — It's dot com 20:53, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
Although some pages may LOOK like they're protected, some are only protected from moves, H*R.com updates 2005 included. Thunderbird 14:19, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, most users don't have the "protect/unprotect" tab at the top, so they don't see any difference. — It's dot com 16:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
But we DO see "View Source" insted of "Edit". Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:02, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmm... I think they should fix that with the next minor upgrade. — It's dot com 19:03, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Why it should be fixed? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:54, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Because if you can edit a page, it should read "edit" at the top, not "view source". — It's dot com 20:29, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Noo.. "view source" is just for protected pages. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 20:38, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Then you're giving conflicting reports here. If you go to H*R.com updates 2005, which is protected from being moved but not from being edited, do you see "edit" or "view source"? — It's dot com 20:43, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
I see "View Source" on the Main Page, but I do see "Edit" on the Updates page. - KieferSkunk 20:44, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
On pages protected from editing, I see "view source". On pages protected from moves, the "move" tag is missing. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 20:58, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Good. That's how it should be. — It's dot com 21:05, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, my problem with the Main Page was that there was no visible way for me to edit the What's New section. I couldn't see any indication that I had edit access to that page at all, until Dot Com pointed me to the template. - KieferSkunk 20:44, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
That's intentional. We tried having a link to edit the what's new section, but it just got repeatedly vandalized. — It's dot com 21:05, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Okay, then - where do I go to find the edit links for the individual templates, in case I find something to edit in the future? - KieferSkunk 21:21, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Thunderbird 23:49, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I mentioned that. It works well. — Lapper (talk) 23:51, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

It's working for me, but just a lttle slow.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 18:35, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
It's down again for me. It's the Cannot Find Server page, and it's not a flash cartoon (I just wanted to check). Maybe it is something that they're putting up, but it's huge, so they had to take it down, like the PQ Movie Trailer. Just a guess. Or it could be a problem with the new sbemail. -AtionSong 21:42, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
Never mind. It's up again, just slow. It keeps saying "one item remaining". -AtionSong 21:43, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
I know, it's REALLY slow. I think they're either trying to put a a big file like you said, or just lots 'o peps are trying to get on.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 21:48, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
Okay, I got the Strong Bad Email page loaded, and there are no links to any emails at all. It's just blank (although there is a more button). Something is definately going on. -AtionSong 21:52, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
Now I can't get on at all. It was trying to load Main Page 7 for over 15 minutes. Something is going on. No doubt about it. — talk Bubsty edits 22:06, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
I just got to the Sbemail page really quick and nothings new. Just a little bit ago I had Bubsty's problem. Hmmm..--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 22:11, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
Back up for me. And running at normal speed! Nothin' new, apparently.-AtionSong 22:37, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
just kidding. It's back down again. I'm just going to check back tomorrow. -AtionSong 22:51, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
Back again. -AtionSong 00:52, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Not working for me still. I sent an e-mail to TBC asking what was going on. — talk Bubsty edits 00:53, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
It's down again. smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 01:01, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

It's still up, just rrll rrll slow. I just downloaded Cool Things, and it took about 7 minutes to download, but it did finish. (NB: keep in mind this is speculation) phlip TC 01:04, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

This isnt good, I cant goof off and watch emails while writing my social studies essay!-- DBK! 01:08, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Aw... poor Burger King. But yeah, it is working now, just real, real slow. — talk Bubsty edits 01:12, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Y'know, it could just be that their webhost is having trouble today, too. :P - KieferSkunk 02:12, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Brilliant, now the wiki is acting really slow too. This happening to anyone else? — talk Bubsty edits 02:35, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Its happening to me too Bubsty, your not alone. -- DBK! 02:41, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
GAH!! It's happening again! It took about 5 minutes for me to be able to edit this page! Wiki... too... slow! — talk Bubsty edits 02:04, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
It's probably that NSMC troll at the fanstuff wiki again.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 02:14, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

HELP!!!

The Fanstuff Wiki is being attacked by the same guys that attacked this place a few days ago. HELP!!! - Joshua 02:39, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

I'm on it man. — talk Bubsty edits 02:51, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
For as long as I can..--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 03:01, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
I got a hold of Tom and he suspended anonymous editing and new user registration. Next time, please be calm and don't flood Tom or Recent Changes with all-caps alerts after other users have tried to notify. —BazookaJoe 03:35, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Yes guys, please. One message here and/or on Tom's talk page was enough. (which I had made) - Joshua

Slowdown

Is it just me, or is the wiki server going really slow? Like, almost too slow to do anything? - Joshua 23:08, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

It's pretty slow for me too right now. Thunderbird 23:25, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Hey... it just returned to normal... weird. Hope it stays like this. - Joshua 23:27, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
And now it's back to slow... Wonder what's up with it? --DorianGray
"Well, I found the problem. Looks like somebody tried to cram-a-lam a Swiss Cake Roll into the disk drive." Thunderbird 00:31, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
No, seriously, it's happenin to me too. It takes like, 5 minutes just to edit my page. Boy the wiki is havin problems. — talk Bubsty edits 01:49, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Yeah i've had to wait about 10 mins to move from the discussion i was going to start to this place. It seems to me we're being targeted by a DoS attack as well. Can anyone confirm this? My guess is that they're using the Database features that are still available to anonymous users to slow things down by overburdening the system with queries. --Stux 01:59, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
I believe that the troll is currently targeting the fanstuff wiki. Even though he's blocked the constant accessing of pages, even though the vandalism is failing, is causing slowdown. small_logo.pngUsername-talk 02:24, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

It's not slow for me anymore. DBK! 02:33, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Never mind, it's slow again. Ugh this is getting me mad. DBK! 02:38, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
In a bizarre plot twist, even the Big Wiki seems to be slow for me. Can the Wikian Bird Flu Pandemic be upon us? —AbdiViklas 03:04, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Odd, wikipedia isn't slow to me. But this place... fanstuff seems slow too. Brilliant. — talk Bubsty edits 03:57, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Why did you jkust repeat what you said in a previous topic. The Wiki and FW are fine for me, just H*R. Count X
