Wikitable class not used?

I've noticed that most tables on this wiki don't use the built-in "wikitable" class. Why is this? Changing all of the tables to class="wikitable" saves a lot more time and space than border=1 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=2 style="border-collapse:collapse". I know it doesn't matter, but I also prefer the light shade of gray on the cell borders, which the wikitable class uses, than the darker shade of gray that we currently use. --76.224.216.122 19:52, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Thorax Corp isn't owned by Harmless Junk... it's owned by TBC, but not under the company. I think there was a whatthepfargtl site at one point, but it was owned by a fan, not TBC. phlip ^T_C 09:23, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

In addition to removing that line, you apparently added a period on a different line, which makes it count as a different edit. The software is designed to merge edits when there's a conflict if they don't interfere with each other. — It's dot com 15:09, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Sort of. If you edit part of an article in exactly the same way as someone else before you, the system won't display a conflict. If you make no other changes, your edit will just be ignored, as in your last example. But if you change something elsewhere in the article, it will show up as two edits: first the part that you both changed (credited to the other person), and then whatever else you changed (which is what happened with the addition of the period in the very first example). The primary use of this feature is to allow one person to edit, say, the transcript of an article and another person to edit the remarks. The system (using diff3) can merge the two edits without displaying a conflict as long as they don't interfere with each other. — It's dot com 21:37, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Help with subtitles

When I tried to do the subtitles for that weird H - o - m - e video, the subtitles wouldn't display because the software automatically assumes that the page is on homestarrunner.com, but it's on videlectrix.com. Does anyone (preferably Phlip) know how to fix this? — MichaelXX2 20:05, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

OK, looks like there were different problems with both the GM script and the local viewer with that subtitles script... both have been fixed. The GM script got confused by the nested templates in the header... which was fixed by creating a redirect so that the nested templates weren't necessary. If we ever do need nested templates on a subtitles script for some reason, adding <noinclude></noinclude> tags around it will also fix it. For the local viewer, it's been changed so that you can have an absolute URL in the file attribute (which has to be a full URL), as long as it's on homestarrunner.com, videlectrix.com or the mirror. Security change?

I know that H*R is suppose to be a Wiki that anyone can edit, but it seems like lately especially, we've had numerous incidents where anonies are coming in just to disrupt the wiki just because they think that they are funny. While I don't want to totally block anony edits, and it wouldn't completely eliminate the problem, but would it be worth it to at least block anony page creation? From what I've observed is that while occasionally an anony does create a useful page, that makes up a very small percentage. wbwolf (t | ed) 15:57, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Back on the original topic of just restricting page creation: We're not Wikipedia, but what Wikipedia does can be informative to us. Wikipedia does in fact restrict page creation to logged-in accounts. What caused Wikipedia to make this restriction was not mere vandalism, but actual libel concerns related to biographies of living persons (the specific impetus a controversy in which a biography was created falsely linking a journalist to the John F. Kennedy assassination) and this was not caught for quite some time. We have no matters this serious here at HRWiki: some nonsense pages are being created and then deleted relatively soon thereafter. We don't sometimes miss a few pages that then sit around for a few days (Wikipedia sometimes does just because it's so big). This kind of step really isn't needed; our cleanup methods are fine. Maybe it's just me, but surely it's more work to tidy up after anonymous users going on rampages than it is to simply prevent anonymous users from going on a rampage in the first place. Though I find it really weird that they even care enough to bother going on said rampage in the first place. In the last three hours, you and Jay have had to block twenty-five different IP addresses (most likely all the same user using some kind of spoofing software) and revert extremely offensive vandalism. It would be sad and counterproductive to block all annonies from editing. Most of them do good work, and I'm sure most users here started as annonies. We should keep the open and inviting nature of this wiki and not panic because every once in a blue moon some idiot is bored. Yeah, it sucks being prevented from editing due to other people's actions. I know this firsthand; this one time I saw a bunch of things that needed fixing at Bulbapedia, but I couldn't do anything because vandals caused account creation to be disabled. Man. The first time I checked this wiki today I saw all of this vandalism going on the recent changes page. And, two days after soda explosion in one of my family's cars, it starts to smell like a dumpster! Boy, is it ever Monday! I'm fine with blocking off anonnies from editing temporarily. It won't be a big loss if anonymous users can't edit for a day or two, as long as it deters some of the proxying vandals away. In short, we had two or three waves of vandal attacks; one group possibly from 4chan or Encyclopedia Dramatica, defacing pages with explicit images from several different IPs, likely spoofed (sidebar: don't go looking at them, they are nasty. I do hope IDC can get them pulled or suppressed). Then our more recent vandal who's been doing all the nonsense pages, showed up, and just defaced pages. That was probably the most foul vandalism I've seen on the wiki. I saw it before the whole server thing went wrong. I was going to make sure that it was all reverted, but I GAVE UP. API URL?

Do we have the MediaWiki API set up over here? I would like to add Homestar Runner Wiki to WikiSnail, a MediaWiki client, on my iPhone. I figured it out myself using some of the presets it came with. The url is "http://www.hrwiki.org/w/api.php". For those wanting to get this app, I'd wait, as it doesn't really make editing (which it can barely do) and viewing on an iPhone/iPod touch any better. Character "Appearances"

Lately I've seen some filmographies that list characters' names being mentioned as "appearances." Isn't that taking it too far? I thought the only cartoons to be listed in filmographies are such in which the character shows up, or at least can be heard speaking. That is the actual character. Problem with the new YouTube links on pages

Strong Bad Email Check

In the Strong Bad Email Check, it says on every email that a subject line should be there. To date, this is only true for Lappy emails. For non-lappy emails, it brings up an error message. Is there something that can be done to fix that? The Knights Who Say Ni 21:42, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

at this point it looks like emails 1-118 are fine, but 169 and 202-current still have it. i'm not sure if this has been changed, or if i was wrong to begin with about the first two computers. anyway, is there something that can be done about the last five (which will grow with every new email)?
